Hey everyone, quick question, not sure if it's even relevant but....what sort of clothing would people recommend for a stainless steel fabricator welder? I'm starting a week trial tomorrow (with a chance of an apprenticeship) in a company who only work with stainless (dairy, pharmaceutical, chemicals, distilleries, breweries etc.) I'm not a big fan of overalls but if they're policy then I'll wear them, I'm guessing with stainless whatever you wear it should be as clean as possible? I've welded before, have a leather jacket but it's not exactly clean, oil and burnt, guessing it's not suitable? Any advice please 😊
Reply:My last shop was just work boots, blue jeans or other appropriate pants and a Wrangler or Dickies long sleeve overshirt for tig and light prep/grinding activities. Also, make sure you have enough pockets for your every day carry items.Pen, pencil, sharpie, pocket scribeTape measure6" scaleFlashlightPossibly an inspection mirrorSent from my SM-G920P using TapatalkLast edited by Chris T.; 01-20-2016 at 09:39 AM.TOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE
Reply:Thanks Chris, I'm hoping that's the policy, jeans and shirt would be my preference but they did mention overalls will be supplied, just hoping they aren't mandatory
Reply:Oh I have plenty of pockets in my trousers (pockets that hang out) and have a body warmer with pockets all over it, just hope this week trial goes good, then I can start figuring out my tools

Reply:No nothing was said yet about tools, I'll bring a measuring tape, mini bolt cutter type snips for cutting stainless filler wire, welding shield, safety glasses, tig gloves, I was only told to bring boots and everything else would be provided, for the next week I doubt I'll need much of my own but I do have tools at home, time will tell which ones I'll need if I'm kept on for the apprenticeship, I only have welding experience......fabrication is mostly new to me so I'm not sure yet what I'll need

Reply:Where i work, overalls and a forced air fed mask with charcol filter are required for grinding or cutting stainless of any type, and overalls worn while working with stainless must be removed ina deyignated quarentine room, and not worn in any crib room or office, reason for these precautions in hexavalient chromeium (chromeium vapor) being present in fumes from welding and grinding stainless, hex chrome has been shown to cause irriversable lung damage in welders and fabricators
Reply:fake it the first day while observing what the other guys are wearing. it wouldn't hurt to ask some sartorial related questions while you're at it.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla

Reply:Well first day of the trial is over, the question of clothing was answered the minute I stepped in the door, royal blue overalls with company logo on the back. As for force fed masks....I did see one person go to a locker and take one out to polish a stainless tank, so they are available just not sure how many, I thought I only read on here yesterday about hex chrome not being an issue with tig welding? I'm guessing health and safety is a lot more....well...... healthy and safe in the U.S. but here in Ireland it seems to be lacking, I've yet to see a workshop with extractor fans, only had them in training courses. Overall I like the place, seems like a good group of lads....I just wish they had damn flexi head tig torches 😂
Reply:Hex   levels with TIG are alot lower then stick or MIG welding, but still there, i have to wear an air monitor once a month to measure my hex chrome exposure, the highest level ive had is 15 microns per liter of air averaged over an 8 hour period (of which maybe 3hour i was actually welding, so my peak exposure would have been far higher then that ), duel shield ive had readings of up to 350 microns, the acceptable continuous exposure over 8 hours is 5 microns per liter of air, so even the TIG welding was 3 times the acceptable limit, if i had been welding for the entire 8 hours it would have been far higher againLast edited by ttoks; 01-21-2016 at 11:03 PM.
