TIG aluminum in DC part 1: The guy in this video is using aluminum stick electrodes as filler with DC TIG. Its a really bad video. In one of the comments, a guy said he tried it and worked well surprisingly. What are your thoughts on this? Of course its half ***, but could it make a better weld then using the electrode in a stick welder, which doesn't work too well? Would the Argon and TIG arc make for a bit more heat, or just control?
Reply:Is he just making a stack of aluminum or actually getting penetration
Reply:One he does not have near enough heat if it's taking him that long to get a puddle and weld an inch.   Second WTF is the point? If you have a TIG welder just TIG weld it.   If it's DC only welder then get some helium and do it that way.   Even that would be better than what he I'd trying to do.  You would get a better weld using those rods as designed in stick mode.  As shown that video should be in the welding fail thread.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:What is the point of that? Is he trying to take two processes and combine them to make a useless third?
Reply:Just waiting for Puddytat to jump in with some amazing Multiplaz/ plasma welding revelation.    It should be noted we did actually this very thing with one in place of the TIG torchTiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:What made you think that guy was welding with DC current?     That really sounded like an AC arc to me.

Reply:Title says DC I think, otherwise this guy wouldn't be doing such child's play . Helium is crazy expensive.Dave, I knew DCEP was possible, is it better to use a thicker tungsten and let it ball up?

Reply:Hmmmm Interesting....Kinda looks like the guy was bored and was just trying stuff out so he could post something? With the stick rod already having a flux cover that was a waste of time and with straight Argon I don't see the benefit of DC-? When I first learned to tig aluminum with DC- it was the only way you tig welded aluminum in the semi conductor industry?  AC was not even considered....100% pen is hard to achieve with Tig unless you have the necessary weld preps in place...And lots of heat...Grade 5 Helium is all I ever used?  Maybe a tiny bit of Argon to help with the start but that's it..    Miller Dynasty 350Twenty Six HammersThree Crow BarsBig Rock
Reply:What happens when you try to weld AL on DC - without helium ? Is it that you can't get a puddle or see the puddle well? Or is it an issue of not enough heat? Id like to be able to just weld some Al  at home once in a while, don't even care if its a good or pretty weld, just little stuff around the house or shop
Reply:Wont have enough heat. Why not use AC?   Miller Dynasty 350Twenty Six HammersThree Crow BarsBig Rock
Reply:I'd love to but I'm just starting out and can't afford/don't want to make the investment yet for AC.Maybe I could buy a small cylinder of helium

Reply:These were done with 100% helium, and a Tig rig, using my Everlast PowerArc 200. With out a remote, welding aluminum you can only make short welds. No way to back off, as the plates get hot. Reply:Thanks for those pics CEP!  Informative .I haven't bought a machine yet , but am considering something like that everlast . with TIG, I  might be able get away with in my basement since its so clean, after i put in some ventilation. It is possible to add a foot control CEP if you want to open it up and  do a little wiring work....
