I have been searching around for anybody who has ever assembled a High Speed Mobile Sawmill with capacity of 20inches diameter for the timber cut. I'm thinking of a high speed diesel engine of 10 horse power as a source to run the sawmill. Any ideas please or link to this?
Reply:Most I have seen are 15hp gas motors. Are you talking about a bandsaw type or a single circular blade? My knowledge is very limited but I have run quite a few and I'm beginning to design one for myself based off one a friend has. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:I would think with a diesel 30-40 horsepower would be more like it. And that would be with a thin kerf.

Reply:They run the sawmill at the steam tractor show with a flat belt off of an old D8 cat
Reply:It comes down to mainly feed rate. What are your intentions. I have seen head rig saws with a 12- 14 inch wide band on 72 inch wheels running 300 HP.electric motors. Also seen small band mills with a 3 inch wide blade running about a 40 HP diesel. Lots of variables.
Reply:I've used a chainsaw mill for small work and I have a bud with a big portable band saw mill.  The circular saws I have seen have been pretty big and quite complicated I guess you would say.  Either the blade or the log have to be on a carriage for it to be efficient.  Either one means a lot of parts working together under the worst of circumstances. It looks like to me that it takes a lot more oomph to spin a large circular blade than it takes to operate a band saw.life is good
Reply:Is this what you are thinking about? http://www.mobilemfg.com/portable-saw-options.htmlThe earlier ones were a little simpler.HH 187Miller Bluestar1EAHP AlphaTig 200X
Reply:A 20" cut on a circle mill would be about a 50" blade.  A lot of mills that size ran something like a 671 Detroit diesel power unit.A small band mill would be a better choice for 10hp

Reply:I've built, assembled and run many different kinds of sawmills and sawmill accessories.  10 HP is fine for 20 inch cut if you are using a band type mill.  But a band isn't high speed generally speaking when compared to a circular mill.  It offers much less waste and much more accuracy many times over but it does not keep up with the production in general unless you put a large band mill into production with a 5 inch band blade and a couple hundred horses powering it.  The mobile dimension mill is a good mill.  Usually they put Beetle engines in them.  I have a neighbor with one now, unfortunately sitting idle.  They are product but maintenance and other issues can keep the sidelined from time to time.  Stay away from the swing mills.  Not heavy enough and too expensive for what they will do.Last edited by lugweld; 11-17-2014 at 12:21 AM.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT

Reply:This is an old school diesel engine power source for running other stuff via belt.   It took these guys a half hour or so to get it lit off but boy howdy when it did fire up did it ever make the ground thump and shake.  Wish I'd have got some video.   Notice the arm coming out from behind the stack holding the cutting torch.  He's heating the "glow plugs".
