I am not very familiar with welding and need some assistance. This will be used for an assignment. a little introduction of this post:I am working on an assignment regarding of Block Lifting in the marine industries whichis used to lift constructed blocks from 1 location to another. The padeye will be welded onto the block andlinked to the sling and lifted by crane. So!Requirement:I was informed that there is a certain required thickness for the padeye in order to attempt a double Bevel Weld. (otherwise, a normal Fillet weld will be considered)What else would be necessary to consider ?The material of the block is of mild steel of 12mm. The material of the padeye is carbon steel with a thickness of 30mm.Thank you in advance!
Reply:first please say this is a classroom project and no actual lifting will take place if i remember correctly i used a fillet weld with no bevel and welded all around. several passes if necessary. heavier loads got two or more padeyes.  the pad eye has to be the proper thickness in relation to what you're lifting. same goes for your shackle and other rigging. adult supervision strongly advised.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:@ L.W. Seam - buy and engineered and ready to go product, vice self-build item: Har-Bach/Padeye.  These padeyes are designed/built IAWthe ASME/AISC codes."Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Reply:Next month it will be 22-years since a broken pad eye almost killed me. I found these on the web. I always like to add gussets to pad eyes if at all possible. Reply:Pad eye location and orientation is critical as well, as block material can fail as well. In my experience those are mostly pre-engineered lifts, are you learning to design lifts?

Reply:I’ve been meaning to build this pad eye for quite some time. So today I built it. I will anchor it to a concrete counter weight. Attached ImagesDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:My apology! yes, there will be no actual lifting taking place.  I was informed by my project supervisor (whom gave me a direction that, by quoting her " There is a required thickness in order to do a double bevel weld, otherwise use fillet weld".I was informed to research for the differences , pros and cons and decide which is more beneficial for my assignment.I understood that there is a certain standards that is a must to follow.

Reply:I’ve done a little rigging. Getting these long concrete pile vertical can be a challenge at times. Have to use rolling blocks to equalize the strain on the pile. Reply:I welded the donut washer from 6 to 12. First one side, then the other. 12 being the top of the pad eye.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Thanks for your reply!
Reply:That pad eye is going to be used to pick up an 850-pound concrete counter weight.I hope to God the welds hold! Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:That won't be a problem... just don't walk underneath!
