okay so overall, what are the easiest welding jobs to get into (shipyard, pipelining, structural, ect)? me and a buddy are supposed to head to midland/odessa in may to do what he called "scrap" or "junkyard" welding over the summer. really dont know what that is but hell i just need to pad the portfolio. but if the structural welding type stuff (small scale) are realitivly simple to jump into id like to do that.Last edited by Cowboy97; 01-06-2016 at 11:35 PM.
Reply:If its a recycling plant then youre gonna put youre stick skills to use. some infrastructure work (catwalks, conveyor belt systems) and build up work on the teeth and grinders that process the materials. If its junkyard work id steer clear. Thats gonna put you in the position to be doing a ton of oxy/acetylene cutting... F that... I mean unless you want to do that.Easy job to get into.....those don't exist anymore if they ever did.
Reply:where are you located? i've never even heard of scrap or junkyard welding, where i'm at if you can run .045 dual shield up and overhead, manage not to drool during the interview, and show up to work. your at 20-25/ hr in a shipyard. (you dont even need to speak english, just nod your head) which if you have ambition is a great place to learn.easy job and easy to get into, in my opinion. i got hired on at a shipyard after learning dual shield in the months prior. no joke maybe put down 15lbs of wire, never even touched a stick welder. i spent five years going from crew to crew. learning everything i could, the only crew i didn't work with was electrical, but i had plenty of experience there. i learned more practical knowledge in the ship yard than i did at college getting my industrial and engineering tech degree. and they paid me!Last edited by tracymobilecnc; 01-07-2016 at 01:01 AM.
Reply:i'm starting to like you cowboy,   my favorite calls are fixing backyard gates for little old ladies for 100-150 a pop.   if i could swing driving around in a half ton pickup w/ hand held welders/equip , eat my lunch at 12 o'clock sharp, and go home at 5 half way clean, all day/every day, i'd be content.   It just depends on how selective you can afford to be.    i think i'm quite more versatile than most others, and i'm still fighting and scratching to survive.
Reply:How far are you from Houme Louisiana? This company is the company I worked for biggest competition. I worked several joint ventures with them. This type of construction company always needs welders. Very good friend of mine is a project manager for them now. He is running the 500-million dollar sea wall down town Seattle. http://www.mansonconstruction.com/homeDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:PNW! about an hour north of Seattle. look into the link that CEP gave mason is a good company, i've worked on their derrick barges.  google it to find all the ship yards, there are also alot of smaller places hiring building aluminum boats. if your truly interested in moving to the best place in the world i take a little more time to list some names.

Reply:To get your foot in the door, try one of the welding labor companies. Some of them advertise on Craigslist, Roadtechs, etc. From my observation, they'll take anybody with a pulse and drug-free piss. I've seen some good welders and some laughable hacks come from them. There's a new power plant going up this year in Lufkin (and all across the country). They need a lot of welders - structural, plate, pipe. You might get a shot there.Once you pass the weld test, you can get on a job and see how the world works. If you're a good hand, the world is your oyster.

Reply:cowboy, here you at?    the welding web has been more quiet w/o you
Reply:An easy welding job to get on at would genie industries around the seattle area. They build scissor lifts for almost every major company that uses man lift type machinery. It is pretty much booth weld and repetitive, but is an easy stepping stone to a better job. Gota build up the resume and experience to get on pipe
Reply:thank you for your effort payman 13 mia, but being cowboy is already business owner, and works long hours, so I have become his temporary agent/spokesman, until he returns.   I just don't see how a place called genie, would be appropiate for a cowboy.   furthermore, cowboys don't like to be cooped up in booths, being told what to do.    As for resumes, I believe cowboy has already submitted that on the world wide web/welding web, so until cowboy returns, I'm handling negotiations

Reply:at first i thought you were saying they buried him under the pipe.     can you imagine having him as a helper?   running his mouth all day long, w/ his big ideas.    by the second day, they would be ready to bury him

Reply:The ship yard around here is always hiring welders . they have a revolving door once they train someone they go to a decent paying job that doesn't have bad working conditions.Sent from my C811 4G using TapatalkVantage 300 kubota ,miller 304 xmt ,lincoln ln 25 pro , ranger 305 G, plenty of other tools of the trade to make the sparks fly.
Reply:Gmmandan, do you know if the ship yard hires through staffing agency or good Ole fashion show up and hand shake?
Reply:Or worse, the "hand 'em a business card and tell 'em to apply online." I'm *so* freaking tired of that runaround.Currently working as a Paralegal, but still interested in hobby welding.Miller Bobcat 225ntOne- Character Fractions: ¼ ½ ¾ ⅛ ⅜ ⅝ ⅞
Reply:I've called, showed up, bugged the crap out of and emailed relentlessly in the pursuit of a job.
Reply:The problem that I've run into is that being relatively new to professional welding, I don't have enough paid experience to get past the robo- screeners for the online job applications. The damn things literally ask you if you have the posted minimum at some point during the process. Staffing agencies don't seem too keen at placing me either. I've gotten very few emails back- more than I did before I got into welding, but still relatively few. Zero interviews, and zero weld tests. It's all been about that experience that I can't seem to get without already having it.I'm guessing that cowboy's been running into the same issue since he has very little formal training and paid experience, and we're at opposite ends of the same metroplex. He just either doesn't realize it, or doesn't want to talk about it.Currently working as a Paralegal, but still interested in hobby welding.Miller Bobcat 225ntOne- Character Fractions: ¼ ½ ¾ ⅛ ⅜ ⅝ ⅞
