Ive been practicing my 5g pipe. 6010 root 1/8", 6010 hotpass 1/8" and 6010 5/32" fill and cover. Im having an issue with slag getting trapped in the edges of my hotpass. Wut should my hotpass look like? Wut kind of rod movement should i be using? Can anybody post a picture of what a hotpass is supposed to look like? Thank you in advance.Ranger 305gMillermatic 140 AutosetDewalt Chopsaw2 grindersMy Fists
Reply:i think it depends on what your root looks like.    try running a grinder over the center of your root, you might be having top much fill before you start your hot.   play w/ it, youll figure out what looks for you.
Reply:w/ a 1/8 in wheel. for me anyway, i do a long arc whip pause thing, just trying to melt over it, not really trying to deposit much, keep it moving
Reply:I'm no pipe welder by any stretch of the imagination, so take anything I say with a grain of salt. I run a U motion. Let the long sides of the U cut out any slag left over from the previous weld's toes, and the bottom of the U fill. Reply:I step the rod,two ahead, one back.  Hot pass goes in kind of fast so it's more of a whip.  Long arc the rear touch the rod in the front. The rod should dig metal in the front of the puddle then wash it back and spread it to the sides. The weld should be concave when it's done, trapped slag on the sides means you adding to much metal.
Reply:Step the rod with a long arc them push it into your puddle. You can even drag the hot pass     . It's a fast pas but should still put some metal in there. When you long arc it should blow out the slag or wagon tracks. Here is a hot pass. Fill pass and a cap all down hill and a inside root picOnlyDifference is it's a 6010 root and 8010 the rest of the way. Same thing. Not the best looking work but good enough for x ray.
Reply:Are we talking uphill or downhill here guys?
Reply:I am talking downhill. What most pipelines are welded. I assumed that being the OP posted about using all cellulose rods but I may be mistaken. But if I am wrong I have pics going the other way.
