I am looking to build a 50 ton mini press brake. I have a few dies that are 32 " long. So I was thinking I would need a 6" stroke or even a 4" stroke ram. My questions are, would 2 25 ton rams equal 50 tons on a press die? Also what pressures do I need to feed say an enerpac or simplex 25 or 50 ton ram. I dont need any speed since the ram is short. I already have an electric 4000 psi 110 volt hi volume low pressure system that I use on my tube bender. I was also thinking of buying a air over hydraulic pump that moved 10 cubic in of oil per minute.(Cheaper and I would prefer this set up) Unless I find an electric for a decent price. I also have seen a few pumps that put out 10,000 psi. Any avantage to these. Would the 4000 psi be better then the 10,000 psi for this set up. Like I said I dont need speed just power. Thanks guys. I will post a few pics of the build as soon I get a ram. Also anyone here know of or selling what I need for the hydraulics? Reply:If it was mine I would only have 10k hoses.  I like the 4000 pumps, a 2+ times safety factor for the operating pressure. With a break that small you will probably not be doing to many over under bends. So I don't see a need to do multiple cylinders. Do need the cylinder to do multiple functions? Is not get a 4k cylinder rated at 50 tons. If you do need to use it for multiple things get a 10k cylinder. Simple math psi = tons/(Pi*(r*r)) I couldn't find the Squared sign on my phone.  That will help you find out what you need or what you have. I have both a dedicated press cylinder (small 30 ton) and a large multi function 50 ton. The 50 is very seldom on the press it usually stays in the gangbox for pulling and lifting jobs. How do you plan on guiding the ram gibs, rails, etc? Just wondering I have been thinking about a 48". I will probably not build it as long as I am in this building already to small and haven't gotten it up and running yet.
Reply:Most enerpac cylinders are rated at 10,000 psi. An enerpac cylinder model RC256 is a 25 ton at 10,000psi with a 6 inch stroke. You can use it at a lower pressure but it would have less force. That same cylinder would only have about 10 tons of force. The formula for force is area(pie x r squared) x pressure. An enerpac hose rated at 10,000psi working pressure has a burst pressure of 20,000psi minimum,
