Hey All!Running into some problems with our new pulse arc (argon) jewelry welder. If I grind up a new sharp tip on the tungsten, gas running, and start welding - about 10 spot welds down and the tip has burnt (exploded) off. Even on the lowest power setting and least about of milliseconds on weld.Additionally, it seems to stick to materials a lot. The welder naturally pulls the electrode back when it welds, but some how it seems to stick still quite often.Any help is greatly appreciated!
Reply:Are you sure you are getting sufficient (if at all) gas flow?

I'd imagine a bit of tungsten contamination would be inevitableLast edited by sausage450r; 10-11-2014 at 06:00 PM.'14 HTP invertig 221Thermal Arc 201ts'15 HTP 2400'13 Hypertherm Powermax 30Esab 875Esab 251Clark Metal Servicespecializing in stainless steel exhaust systems
Reply:FYI, you would be best on a jeweler forum, I'm sure few people here are familiar with jewelry welders'14 HTP invertig 221Thermal Arc 201ts'15 HTP 2400'13 Hypertherm Powermax 30Esab 875Esab 251Clark Metal Servicespecializing in stainless steel exhaust systems

Reply:What is your cup size. Too much gas is just as bad as too little as it can cause a venturi effect and drag air into the gas stream. What blend is your tungsten? And is your polarity correct?Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:I have had a great deal of tungsten erosion if the gas is contaminated. Try checking that as well.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.

Reply:Originally Posted by sinrevI'm not sure the cup size, it's the stock one that comes with the machine. Not sure the blend of tungsten, it's just what came with the machine (nothing saying what it is). Polarity should be correct as there isn't an option to switch it anywhere. How should I check if the gas is contaminated? Thanks for the great help!
Reply:Hold on. That looks like a #4 cup or smaller. You may be surging the gas flow. I would take the gas flow down to 6cfh, and work up to 8 cfh, 10 max. Better to have too little gas flow than too much, as at least you lose less. Me thinks you need a portable gas flow checker from Netwelding.com to check your surge flow.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:I see that in the video the tungsten auto retracts. Are you pushing against the tungsten? That would be bad. Let the electrode retract or program it to retract more. Does the gas flow all the time? That would be bad too. Gas is not cheap. Does your machine have a preflow setting before arcing?Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
