I have been using Lincoln .068 NR212 wire for some time now with no problems. We just switched over to Lincoln .072 232 flux core wire about a week ago and I must say I am not happy with it. The 212 seems to lay down smooth and produces a nice looking weld like 7018. However the 232 seems to leave a weld that looks like it was to cold and to fast of a wire speed. I have tried turning the volts up and the wire speed down and vice versa with no luck. According to the Lincoln spec book, the 232 is suposed to have a nice looking weld with self peeling slag. I have yet to see either happen which leads me to believe I am doing something wrong. The facts,Lincoln V350 pro w/ LN25 Wire feeder.Tried everything between 16-24 volts, 50- 300 wire speed.Lincoln NR232 .072 wire w/o gas.DC-Welding 1/2" plate to 2" plate. All A36.I have tried making adjustments to my arc angle, my technique, voltage, wire speed, and hot start with no luck. Attached is a picture of a test weld on 1/2" plate. Is it me or is this how 232 welds. Does it lack the "stack of dimes" look to the bead or am I just doing it wrong.Any positive feedback would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you in advance for your feedback
Reply:I just don't know if I should help an operator!NR-212, and NR-232 are not even on the same planet! With NR-232 proper stick out is very important.I was going to post some pictures, but it won't allow me to.  Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:CEP.... Thanks for the response. Yeah, I wouldn't help me out either!I am guessing by your picture's, thats about as good as it gets with 232!I ran a bunch of passes with it and got the bead looking uniform like yours. I just figured there would be a nice weave pattern in the weld, not look like Ni-rod.
Reply:I never ran NR-232 on the job. I got out of welding before the Northridge earthquake. In my welding days we mostly used NR-211, and Hobart's Fabshield 21-B. I've played with NR-232, NR-233, and Coreshield 8. NR-233 is a little bit easier to run than NR-232. Coreshield 8 is easier than NR-233. First picture is NR-233 flat. Second picture is NR-233 vertical up. Third picture is Coreshield 8 flat. Reply:Take a look at these 233 pics.http://forum.weldingtipsandtricks.co...php?f=9&t=5974
Reply:@ CEP, I don't have to run 232. I was just looking for somthing that was rated for thicker plate with a single pass. 232 is rated for 1" and the 212 is rated for 3/4". Our welding supplier tells me there is an Esab wire that is the same as the 232 but is easier to run. Perhaps I will try out the Esab wire.@AKweldshop. Thanks for the link. I think from what you and CEP have shown me I am in the ball park. Thanks.
Reply:If you're not working to a code that requires a T-8 wire. Try some Hobart Fabshield 21-B. It is every bit as easy to run as NR-212. I can't tell you how many 1-inch side bend tests I've taken with that wire, never failed a one. Trust me a couple of them I just knew I failed, but I was wrong, passed every one of them. Before the Northridge earthquake these manufactures didn't put thickness limits on their wire. So back in those days we didn't know any better. Here is some 21-B ran with my 1966 SA-200, CC only machine. Reply:Thanks for the heads up... I will order some up and give it a shot! Thanks.
Reply:What is the voltage and wire speed you used on that weld?
