No welding on this one, but thought I'd share since lots of us probably have things we could stand to get up off of benches/tables/countertops as well as scrap material laying around...I wanted to get some of our less-frequently-used chemicals off the kitchen counter without having to mess with the child-safety lock that's on the cabinet under the sink.  Laundry room seemed like an appropriate place for cleaning stuff and we had some wall space above the fire extinguisher between the broom and the swiffer.  Had some 1x4, but needed little shelf brackets to match.  Looked on the Lowe's and Home Depot websites but the smallest they had were 5" x 6".  Could have used zinc-plated corner braces since there wasn't going to be a lot of weight on the shelf, but I figured if I was going to go utilitarian, I could scrounge/fab something on my own.  I liked the idea of gusseted corner braces and had considered patterning and bending some from sheet, but then I realized I had some material that already had the bends taken care of.  Enter my box of CD and disk drive shells.  Picked a decent-looking one and marked off the brackets.  Little jig-sawing, little drilling, and done.  It's no Martha Stewart collection, but it was free and it works.  May take it down at some point to powdercoat the brackets and paint the shelf.
Reply:That is a great repurpose!  I have some of that kind of cra.. er, stuff laying around. I'm sure the wife could use a new shelf somewhere...GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:Thanks!  A 2-gang electrical box could work too - just cut it along the diagonal.  Or any other piece that has two bends adjacent to a corner.Speaking of shelves, I had another idea for individual shelves for safety glasses.  Take a piece of steel stud and cut it to 6 or 7 inches long plus 2X the height of the flanges.  Snip a square from each end of the two flanges to leave a tab on each end of the base.  Fold these up, tack or tape if desired, and add some mounting holes in one flange.Actually, the steel stud shelf might even be strong enough to hold some aerosol cans (or a beer or two)...
Reply:This one is 6.5" long, modeling a pair of 3M / AO Safety Virtua glasses (my favorite cause they are cheap and comfortable):Cut with tin snips; bent ends with a hammer, old transformer, and 2x4; and holes punched with a clone version of the Roper Whitney No. 5 Jr. hand punch.  Holes are 3/16" diameter, 1" in from each end, and 3/8" down from the top.  Will need to strip off the zinc, hit the corners with the TIG next time I have it on, and paint or powdercoat.

Reply:Thanks guys.  I finally got the steel stud shelf put up.  Just wrapped the perimeter in aluminum tape for now to keep the corners together (although it really didn't need it with as little as a pair of glasses weighs).  My lathe safety glasses needed a home, but since I didn't have a wall nearby, I cut a short piece of scrap wood so I could clamp it onto the plastic shelf of chemicals and paint that lives behind the lathe:Had another idea for steel studs this morning that might be timely for the holiday season - a mini toolbox:Same deal as before, just a new shape for the tabs on the ends.  Handle could be a wooden dowel screwed in from each end or a small-diameter piece of conduit or tubing tacked in place.  Would make a cool gift-holder for a small tool, gift card, candy, etc.  Paint and personalize as you see fit.  A wooden block that fits inside with some holes drilled in it could turn it into a pencil holder.Last edited by dbotos; 12-01-2014 at 03:04 PM.
