Customer of mine wanted an anti-thef ladder rack to bolt to the side of a concrete wall. His design.Tubing (1.5 sqare, and 1x2) is .095 wall. End caps are 1/8 and 1/4 flat bar. Mr T's bling chain is about 3/8.Since its going to be outdoors, I wanted it water tight. Initially, the part that bolts to the wall was going to be flat bar, but I'm blind, and didn't see my stash of 1/4x2 material, til after the job was done. From 1" hot rolled round bar, I turned some tubes down on the lathe, 1/2 od, 3/8 ID. The mounting bolts go through the holes. I tig welded them into the 1x2 tubing, ground the welds flush, and hit the holes with a die grinder. These caps go on the end of the horizontal tubes, upon which the ladders sit. They're shaped on a bench grinder, and hit with a flap wheel to smooth them out. A length of chain gets welded to the upper cap, and a link gets welded to the bottom. Chain passes through ladders, and locks to the link.Caps welded to supports, and 1x2 tube, and welds are ground down. 3/32 2% thoriated, 100 or so amps. .065 filler. I weld prepped everything, except for the middle of the 1/4 flat bar, which is why you can see some dirty-dirty on the welds. I did hit them with a wire wheel on a pneumatic tool, which helped some.To be continued.~AaronJet 17.5" Drill Press1942 South Bend 16x84 Lathe1980s Miller 320A / BP --- 2013 Power Mig 2562012 Jet 7x12 Horizontal BandsawVictor O/A Setup

Reply:............continued.Not sure what coating was on the chain, but I did a practice bead on a the link I cut to isolate a complete link from the chain. I think it was 21 volts, 220 or so WFS, .035 wire. And here's the finished project...well, at least its finished on my end. Customer will paint / install, then send me pics. I'll post again when I get those pics. If you want to see the video of the project, here ya go! -AaronJet 17.5" Drill Press1942 South Bend 16x84 Lathe1980s Miller 320A / BP --- 2013 Power Mig 2562012 Jet 7x12 Horizontal BandsawVictor O/A Setup
Reply:very nice work and a good design only problem in these parts the theives stole Dewalt or other brands cordless grinders it seems nothing made of metal can stop them, even the principal from the school ask about getting a couple to grind off locks for random checks. Good luck clifton |
