I have a project coming up that requires notching some DOM tubing.   All notching will be at a right angles and maybe a small offset.     Would a tube-notcher have any real advantage over a drill-press for this job?
Reply:Even if I were using a tubing notcher I would use it in a drill press or vertical mill. The only advantage I see is the ease of setting your angles as most notchers have a graduated scale.Unless your doing lots of angles I'd save my money, that is if you have a decent vise for your drill press.jmo
Reply:Do you mean the shear type tube notchers that simply take a bite out the end of the tube. If so the advantages are speed and repeatability. But they are unable to do any angles or offsets. Hole saw type notchers are capable of any angle and a few are capable of offsets. But they are slower and you have to replace the hole saws fairly often. Not sure how you would use a drill press to notch tubes without a notching rig.Ian TannerKawasaki KX450 and many other fine tools
Reply:I assumed the hole saw type of notcher. I notch tubing on my vertical mill using my swivel Kurt vise.I have also used a angle plate to mount my vise to,  to get angle copes.
Reply:I use my JMR hole saw notcher all the time. I have it bolted to one of my tables that I use primarily for tube fabrication and I generally get about 200-300 notches out of a hole saw.Unless you have a very stout drill press with a large(r) vise on it (like a mill) trying to notch a tube will be a pain in the butt.If you are just doing a few tubes and most are 90*, or close to it, you can always use the old chopsaw method. Google, "Chop saw tube notching" and you will get many resources for it.Here's a pic of how my notcher is setup..http://all-a-cart.comWelding Cart Kits and accessories

Reply:if its a right angle and offset, you might look into a mill..The only way I've used my notcher is either in a vise, or mounted on its side on a heavy table.tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/

Reply:for "notching" you really can't beat a cheap hole saw notcher unless maybe you have a mill.trying it in the drill press without a very short spindle and awesome vice will likely wipe out your drill press. there is method of using 1/4" drill rod in the stock hole saw arbor. look on pirate 4x4.A simple notcher like the JD2 Notchmaster is a great tool and is very useful without spending $500.I have run hundreds of notches on a harbor freight notcher bought at a swap meet, it sux and works all at the same time.Millermatic 251Century 180 migSpectrum 625 Syncrowave 250DX
Reply:google a calculator for chop saw tube notching. It really is easy and cuts nice fishmouths.
Reply:I used to put my notcher in the drill press all the time. Then I started using a drill and never used the drill press again. The hole saws are just to hard on the drill press.
