Is there something special about a Redface?I just picked up one that has been sitting around for about 2 years.They said it ran.Craigslist $145.It seems that people want these more.   SA-200-F-163      SR#  A-629225

Reply:I have a '72 SA 200 with aluminum windings.  It seems to weld the same as the all copper red faces.  I've heard as the aluminum windings heat up, you have to keep dialing your remote up to keep the same heat- the all copper red faces, withstand heat better so you'll keep a consistant heat.  Is this difference between the aluminum and copper machines true?  Anyone with first hand experience on this?  Thanks. Reply:There are some who swear they can tell a difference in them. Smooth buttery welds are a given with the SA 200 welder, provided it's properly maintained. In 1978, I think, there was a problem with a burnt shunt coil on a specific code #. From that point on there has been a prejudice against the aluminum windings. Reply:Sounds like the deal you got is making everybody red in the face.     I bought one one time for 2 hundred bucks.    It ran but didnt weld. And had to drive up to the snowy mountains to get it.    I spent alot of time and fustration into it before I figured out what was wrong.   Finally lincoln help me figure it out.   I replaced the commutator and that fixed the problem.   I pulled one off of one that had aluminum windings that I have for parts.   The commutator was a different part number than the one that was in it, also I think it was about a quarter or half inch difference in diameter.    Lincoln told me it would be fine to swap them , it would just make my amperage slightly hotter than what settings would say.    Anyway it welds fine and amperage seems to coordinate just fine w/ what the dials read.
Reply:Interesting.  I must be one of those that can't tell the difference between the aluminum and copper.  Both butter a 7018 rod the same like you said gizzard.  Both weld the same to me- especially with 7010 rods, definately no difference there.  Heck you could turn on the SA 200 and the Miller bobcat 250, throw the garage down down, hook the leads to either one and I couldn't tell you which machine was burning the rod.  However, if it an't grey, you can't stay!
Reply:Well,I got the door's and hood off.As you can see it's missing a toggle switch on the right side.The bosch distribator  has a wire that come's off it and goes up to the missing switch area.So I think the wire would go to the top(on) position of the 20amp new toggle switch I just bought.I think the bottom terminal of the switch would be the source,but were does the source come from?Does anyone have a eletrical print or something that can help.I drained the oil and it was black,better black then looking like milk coming out.I gunked it 3 times.I got a new thermostat and spark plug's to put in but had to order a oil filter.I will also inspect the point's.I did order the free cd from welding web and also read a lot on the American welding Society.I can turn it by the cooling fan,so at least I know it's not seized.I had the guy load it into my box truck,then I had to go to harbor Freight and buy a engine hoist just to get it out of my truck.It's not in great shape due to rust but hopefully it operate's ok. The hour meter read's 0765,I don't know if that's a lot or not. Attached Images

Reply:John, let's get you started in the right direction, first you do not have a distributor, you have a Magneto, the difference is when it rotates it creates it's own electrical field and spark without input from the battery. The battery is used to crank the starter. The advantage here is if your battery quits you can hand crank that old girl or jump it and keep right on welding. If you doubt me , just take a plug lead off and hold it in your hand while some one turns it over and you will soon see what I was talking about. just kidding. The wire from the Mag is to ground it out through a kill switch when it is running to shut it down. You will find a set of points under the cap. with a rotor much like a distributor. These usually come with the hand crank in a bracket on the inside of the machine, but are often long lost, Can still be had on ebay. Reply:Got it running today for about 1 minute only because it is in the garage.I changed the oil/filter and a set of plugs.I used the gas tank from my snow blower because I still have to clean the welders fuel tank.I am going to bid on a 1985 SA-200-f-163 this weekend,maybe I will get lucky and win.To clean the tank someone said to use BB's and Kerosine and shake the daylights out of it.I am open to suggestions.
