Well, it looks like the owner of Potomac Steel retired and sold off the business. The new owner, around December, dropped Saturday hours.  Either he didn't want to come in on Saturday or he wasn't making enough money. In either case, I would make that 45 min drive (all highway) precisely because of the Saturday hours. My day job is about another 20 minutes in the opposite direction. Bottom line, I don't think I can get there anymore. Not doing me much of a favor on pricing either. So what's a hobbyist to do?  Looks like Metals Depot prices are similar (if not a bit better - don't know how delivery fits in)I live/work in Maryland between Baltimore and Washington DC.Looking around there is Boulevard sales - Good for little stuff, but the big stuff is outdoors and tends to be rusty (spend a lot of time cleaning it). There is also BMG Metals - not sure how they feel about small quantities. There is also Infra Metals and Samuel and Son.  Again,  I don't know how they feel about small quantities.Other options?Con Fuse!Miller Dynasty 350Millermatic 350P-Spoolmatic 30AMiller Multimatic 200Hypertherm PowerMax 1000G3Miller Maxstar 200DX
Reply:This happens with many businesses. The new owner probably has a large loan and he thinks raising prices is the way to recoupe the money needed to pay the loan. Then 2 years down the line he goes out of business because all his customers left.  It happens over and over again.  That is why it is so important not to borrow on a business .  He might even have a note with the old owner. Many people in business think they can sell it for 10 times its gross. That is a sure recipe for bankruptcy of the new owner.  People do it every day though. If a guy had enough to pay for the business he would not want the business so it is a catch 22.  Save your pennys and in 2 years you can buy all his stuff at auction and reopen at good prices again.
Reply:I haven't dealt with BMG in quite a few years, just because I didn't need anything.  When I did, it was mostly on behalf of our high school robotics team. Though they didn't sponsor our team, they did let me walk through the warehouse and select stuff from their dings and drop pile and price was good.  Later I got some stuff for personal use, but it was a $50. minimum I think. They didn't seem too wild about selling small quantities. When my son was in the local community college welding program, they got their metal at BMG.  Supposedly good quality metal, not just whatever a magnet stuck to.  Their HQ location is here in Richmond. In the warehouse, they had a band saw that looked big enough to saw a VW Bug in half."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:I deal with bmg locally and they have a $50 min fee and they will make one cut ie cut the stick in half for you. We have never had a steel supply, bolt supply or a welding supply  open on Saturday. When I have weekend work you double and triple check your supplies. Reply:Not sure what you buy but standard supplies has lots of structural related stuff.  No sheetmetal though.
