New brand I got. Just wondering if anyone had any experience with this rod.
Reply:Owned by Bohler? Their website says Avesta is made in Sweden, so they should be good rods! I'm just leery of the Bohler brand after I read a can of 7018's on a job recently and found they were made in China!Last edited by Advan; 10-30-2014 at 01:38 PM.
Reply:An opinion on stainless stick brands? I find every brand will have it's own characteristics. After you've played around for a while you can adjust to any of them. Most apparent difference would be appearance. Most brands will lay down buttery smooth like a 7018 and some brands will want to lay a defined profile more like 6010. More important 'quirk' for stainless rods is how some brands will cover inclusions, pinholes, contaminations, etc. better than others. You may ask why would you want a rod that will hide flaws. Answer is a lot of the time, as when you're doing non-pressure repairs, you may just want to replace a cracked fillet and not dig out for 100% penetration. Could be there are impurities beyond the depth you have gone but all you want is to lay down a clean bead and then work your way out. Some ss rods will do this quite nicely. With Avesta you're going to have to work at that first pass. Avesta rods will not help you hide anything. Technique has to be on the money. Each pass has to be clean or it will pinhole or refuse to tie in. Good rod for testing with as it will show your mistakes. Only an opinion of course.
Reply:Thanks for the great info guys! |
