I have been welding some 3"x3"x1/4" square tube to make wood storage racks that are fork truck friendly to load and move around. When I was tacking it all together upside down on a table using 1/8" p5 I had the 'ah ha' moment while starring at the gaps on either side of the legs and ran them down hand with good results. Sorry I have no weld pics but I had a nice little stack of upside down letter u's to weave a 7018 on top of and no more gap. I found I could either straight drag down or if it was a lil bigger of a gap to give a whip and pause to it. I know this is old news to you seasoned hands but to someone like me who rarely uses 6010 this gave me a new found interest in it, jest had to share it with y'all. Specs was tacking and down handing 1/8" 60105p+ at 85 amps and filling with 1/8" 7018 at 126 amps, machine had a digital read out.The pic just gives the idea of what I was putting together and the joint set up.Ranger 250 thick stuffHobart Handler 140 not thick stuffthe pane and oxy setup
Reply:Far be it for me to be the terminologically police. But down hand welding, is flat welding. Down hill welding is vertical down. I take it as that is what you meant?Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Well CEP I reckon different places call it different thing things but none the less I meant vertical down. And no I am not offended heck I caint even spell stuff right half the time and it will take me ten minutes just to get this typed out lol.Ranger 250 thick stuffHobart Handler 140 not thick stuffthe pane and oxy setup

Reply:Where I come from a traveling pipe welder welder down hand, everbody else welded downhill
Reply:Well down hill, down hand, vertical down, I wish I would have tried this years ago, it sure makes bad fit ups a whole lot easier. Maybe the terminology is location and industry related, in south Alabama in a steel mill when someone says "put a down hand root in it" they, we, mean run vert down whether its a pipe plate or a hexagon lol. I am not saying I am right either words get misused for long nuff and everyone thinks its normal.Ranger 250 thick stuffHobart Handler 140 not thick stuffthe pane and oxy setup
Reply:6010 5p has worked miracles for me and filled many many gaps.
Reply:I like down hand better than up hill.
