What do you use?Specifically with things like hole saws (up to two inch), and small regular bits up to around 1/2"?I know theres got to be a "right" thing to use. I used to use motor oil, but decided to experiment with a few other things. I recently tried automatic transmission oil and that didnt work well at all Would "thicker" oil work better than "thinner"? Say, maybe gear oil would be better than motor oil.Idk, but thats why Im asking I guess. Thanks in advance, guys [Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. Reply:Typical newer, no low speeds drill press wouldn't hurt to use a water-soluble cutting oil. Available locally at the welding supply here in town in gallon concetrate jugs. About a 20:1 mix for use on the lathe, mill or drill press. Slower, older style, drill press probably wouldn't give you as much bang for the buck out of cutting oil. Thicker oil isn't the solution...sorry for the pun. You're looking for a sulphur, well...sulphur in the good old days before lawyers and the EPA, based oil to lubricate and cool the bits. I use Rapid Tap brand for the lathe and mill and it works well. Purchase by the gallon if you think you'll use it...far less expensive per use that way.Lincoln PrecisionTig 275Miller 251Miller DialArc 250Bridgeport millHossfeld bender & diesLogan shaperJet 14 X 40 latheSouth Bend 9" 'C'Hypertherm 900Ellis 3000 band saw21"Royersford ExcelsiorTwo shops, still too many tools.
Reply:The dark pipe threading oil is cheap and good for steel. If you primarily want a coolant, water with a hefty dose of washing soda is better than nothing (for steel). Lubricating oils (for bearings) isn't what you want."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:I used motor oil the last time with a 4 1/2" hole saw, because it was what I had. It did the job, but was a bit messy.
Reply:I use "Soluable Oil"...http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/RUS...P58?Pid=searchNot exactly the same stuff but you can use it anywhere cutting tools meet any kind of metal.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:RIGID NU CLEAR, pipe thread cutting oil works for me.
Reply:I use Rapid Tap or soluble oil. Definitely soluble oil on bigger holes or with the annular cutters.Last edited by Sandy; 07-28-2012 at 10:31 PM."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt

Reply:Old fashion pipe threading oil or Tapamatic cutting fluid..Moly Dee on SS or tougher metals.
Reply:I drill and hole saw dry. Only time I use any fluid is when I am having trouble with a harder material (4130 and the like) and I can see the bits are heating up. Then I will just grab whatever is wet and closest to me.
Reply:Cutting fluid is as different from motor oil, as ATF is different from motor oil. Would you put motor oil in your transmission?I don't understand why people would skimp on a little can of oil that lasts a long, long time, and works so much better. I keep cutting fluid in a little cup strapped to the column of my drill press and apply with an acid brush. I've been on the same tiny can of tap magic for about 7 years.Ian TannerKawasaki KX450 and many other fine tools

Reply:Recently started notching 1 1/2" sched. 40 for handrail on a Bailiegh TN 250 and wanted something I could weld on without cleaning or making a wet mess with a water soluable. Grabbed an old, dirty, used up container of nozzle gel with a small brush and put a swipe on the hole saw. Seems to work well and the hole saws are getting 150-200 notches each. Will try it on the drill press/mag drill when we go to drilling vent holes.
Reply:For a drill press and regular drilling your more cooling the drill bit than you are lubricant. I have used everything from water to WD-40 to high end cutting oils and tapmatic.Best bang for the buck is water. WD-40 is a second. this is using regular HSS drill bits,Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:Kerosine? Im gonna remember that, the only thing I know about kerosene is that its a Miranda Lambert song...Today I stopped at lowes and picked up a small (quart?) container of thread cuttin' earl' and I cant wait to try it out. It was three something dollars, not bad at all, especially if it works. Thanks everyone [Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. See you on YouTube! -ChuckE2009

Reply:Rapid Tap, Tap magic, or water soluable mill cutting fluid are all good.
Reply:rapid tap, 3 in 1 oil or cutting oil from princess auto. Also Anchor brand lube (It's a green paste) works good on hardened steels. The machine shop at work uses "cool-all"Just ordered a free sample of Anchor Lube from their web site. http://www.anchorlube.com/Kerosene is good for Aluminum. I've used Marvel Mystery oil for drilling Aluminum because it was handy.
