Heard from my Uncle the other day about a guy selling a '53 Shorthood machine up north of Austin. He's asking $2000 for it, says it runs and welds great and the old vacuum idler works as well. It has electric start and an alternator instead of the old 12V generator setup. It has both side doors which seem to be hard to find and it's not rusted out at all. It does come with leads, about 100ft or so. Is that a fair price if the engine and welder are in good shape? Seems a little on the high side to me, what do yall think? It's gonna be about a 500 mile round trip so I gotta take fuel cost into account as well.RD 1984 Chevrolet C30 welding truck1966 Lincoln SA200 Continental F162 1942 Lincoln SA200 Hercules IXB-51991 Lincoln LN25

Reply:Offer $ 1,000. after all it is dang near a 60 year ol machine ! Does it leak oil ? Does it burn oil ? is it remote ready ? with a remote ? Just say 'n . . .
Reply:He said it doesn't burn oil or have any leaks. No remote and not set-up for one, this is just an old machine that had the electrical system overhauled and updated. I talked with the guy for just a few minutes the day before and he said the price was firm, but I'm gonna talk to him again tomorrow and see if I can work a deal or not.RD 1984 Chevrolet C30 welding truck1966 Lincoln SA200 Continental F162 1942 Lincoln SA200 Hercules IXB-51991 Lincoln LN25
Reply:Did you make an offer on the shorthood ?
Reply:Yep I sure did, his price wasn't negotiable at all not even $1500 so I let it be. It's missing the air filter for one thing, probably has other stuff wrong so I'm keepin an eye out for a better machine. I fixed the idler on Hercules tuesday and put some lights on the trailer so he's mobile again until I find a 200. Reply:Its a shame you don't live closer to Pa. I know where a shorthood is on a trailer. I don't think it runs but i think the guy said it only needs fresh gas. Here in Pa., (especially north east PA) they say there are old lincolns for some of the cheapest prices in the whole country. Bought my 1978 SAE 300 for $875. I've done nothing to it but add a muffler (it came on a trailer). In January, bought my 1972 SA 200 for $300. Just replaced the fan belt the other day (it also came on a trailer). That's why when you mentioned that guy was asking $2,000 -sounded a little steep. Glad you passed on the machine. Keep looking you'll find a good one for reasonable $. Glad to hear your maintaining that 300 ! Don't ever sell that one ! Good luck.
Reply:Yep they're out there, just gotta find 'em. I drive by one that's on a 16ft trailer full of junk all the time, old guy won't sell it for nothing and I'm sure the engine is locked as it's been uncovered for years. Nope we'll never sell 'ol Hercules no way, best welding machine I've ever ran. I pulled the idler apart and found the old Schrader valve was worn out, stuck a new one in and re-adjusted the vacuum valve for the idle-down delay time and that was all it took. I burned about half a 50lb. box of 1/8" 6010's yesterday working on a cattleguard and pipe fence, ran without a hitch! My Cousin in Dallas found these, way too far for me though I told him to go after 'em. Reply:no way in h*ll id buy that shorty from pittsburgh for $650. looks like that guy pulled that thing from the bottom of a lake.
Reply:I got my eye on that welder in Muskogee. I'm waiting to sell a lathe and I'm going to run up there and get it.http://www.facebook.com/groups/sa200weldersCurrent machines:Hobart G600 Powered by 1967 Chrysler LH-318 (Project)Hobart GF-250(Traded)68 Redface81 Blackface
Reply:LOL yeah that last one is Rough with a capital R, straight out of a cesspool! Good luck with the one in Muskogee shanghyd, looks like a good straight machine. Just takin a gander on C-list and found this Continental F163? powered SAF-300 for $725 in Ruffsdale, http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/bfs/1790588649.htmlRD 1984 Chevrolet C30 welding truck1966 Lincoln SA200 Continental F162 1942 Lincoln SA200 Hercules IXB-51991 Lincoln LN25
Reply:Does anyone know how the SAF 300 and the SAE 300 are different ? I know the SAF has the 163 but what about the generator ?
Reply:You can run wire feeders off of the SAF machines is all I know, on the first page under the pic of the machine read under Semi-automatic welding. There were also older machines that used F162's.http://content.lincolnelectric.com//...r/im/IM251.pdfRD 1984 Chevrolet C30 welding truck1966 Lincoln SA200 Continental F162 1942 Lincoln SA200 Hercules IXB-51991 Lincoln LN25
Reply:Thanks for the link RobertDoubrava. Looks like the SAF 300 has a slightly higher duty cycle than the SAE 300 at 80% at 300 amps. Its interesting that Lincoln would want a 4 cylinder instead of a 6 cylinder in the SAF 300. Especially because wire feeders can load an engine hard and for a long time.
Reply:Sure thing lincweld! Any time I find an old engine driven machine I like to know the specs on 'em. I was surprised as well that all it had was a 4 banger, any other 300 amp SAE machine has a straight six or a diesel engine. By the way I found the craigslist ad for that overpriced '53, when I saw 200L in the title of the listing i never checked it but lo and behold there it was. The sheetmetal does look good like he said but the price still aint that good. http://austin.craigslist.org/tls/1787354890.htmlRD 1984 Chevrolet C30 welding truck1966 Lincoln SA200 Continental F162 1942 Lincoln SA200 Hercules IXB-51991 Lincoln LN25

Reply:Yep, seen that one the other day. The same guy had a 1955 that was bone stock, had a 12V starter and generator and the original handcrank. That one went for $2500 I believe, was completely rebuilt and painted like that one.
