I'm going to be putting together my own 8'X4' floor to ceiling windows out of Makrolon and aluminum. I want the structure to be as minimalist as possible. I am in Florida, so there is windload compliance. The cabin itself won't be very large. One story, figure about 24w X 32w X 10' to interior ceiling + a flat roof. Are heavier thickness steel tubes suitable for light structural stuff?
Reply:They make structural steel studs. As long as the tube you are looking at exceeds the size and thickness of those, you shouldn't have any issues. Size typically gains you more strength than thickness on things like this. You can hold up a lot more with say thin gauge 2x6's than you would with heavier gauge 1" square tube. The resistance to bending comes from the shape more than the thickness..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
