Aluminum welding tig rigs can be costly so is it cost effective to just get an aluminum gun for my mig welder? Do the welds from these guns look amd hold legit?
Reply:Depends on your welder, and what you plan to weld. You need around 200 amps to do anything substantial with AL, even more so with a MIG spool.

Reply:newbie1977, one main reason for TIG equipment is the lower speed of welding and the extreme control of each bead that results. MIG is not a slow rate process so control of thin (low amperage) work pieces in aluminum is usually harder (maybe very much harder) with MIG than TIG. Not that learning to TIG weld is being dismissed as easy or fast, my focus is on why so many people use TIG for smaller and thinner (hobby scale) work. One aspect of the TIG market often overlooked is the very low cost (deals come and go- craig's/ebay) of former high end transformer power supplies resold for lower prices now that newer digital controlled inverter based power supplies are in the market.cheers,Kevin MorinKenai, AK
Reply:All i have been doing is running stringers to practice w tig gun its thicker metal but 1/16 filler. Should i up the amps for the thicker metal or lower amps for control with the thinner filler? |
