Well....Unless the guy is not what he seems over the phone and he takes my deposit and runs I will be driving about 13 hours to pick up my new to me TB 325 EFI in about a week. It has only been run less then one hour over the past year and still has close to two years on warranty as confirmed by Miller. It comes with a 1/0 50 foot ground and 1/0 lead plus the battery jumper cables...other then that I need to get a few more things. I was planning on the 9100x or 9100xx 3m speedglass welding helmet since my other one is a turd covered in burnt hair...any input here?I will get a cover before I head to pick it up. Best place for that?I have plenty of welding gloves, grinder, glasses, chop saw, ear plugs etc...not enough clamps I am sure.My dad has swiss cheese carhartt hoodie welding jackets and I was thinking of getting an actual one but wanna go on the cheaper side here. Any input here? Here is where I really want some help. I was planning on picking up some 6010 like the Lincoln fleet weld 6010 5p+ I see so many using around here on rusty pipe and some 7018. I am just shy of a beginner here and would like to avoid the pitfalls of jacking around with sub par rod. I will need to weld thin all the way up to 1/2 inch or so immediately for my many homestead projects. Number/brand/size rod to keep in my arsenal?? P.S I have not been this excited in years for a new tool. Hope I picked right as we have been shopping and saving for what seems like forever.
Reply:Please just don't say you found it on CL for $1500 and it's being held in escrow, etc... Yeah, pick up some 6010. The 5p+ is what Lincoln sells now. You can find the old brick red 6010 on eBay. I've bought a lot of it over the years. It's great rod for fixing just about anything. 7018 is a mainstay, but likes clean metal as opposed to 6010 which will weld together just about any condition metal you can strike an arc on.As far as a cover goes, I'm not crazy about Millers offering. I think it's kinda cheap to be honest. Take a trip to your local awning or tarp shop and see what they will charge you to make you one out of the heavy duty material truck tarps are made from. Just a thought.Good luck with it.IMHO of courseLast edited by 7A749; 02-24-2016 at 04:19 PM.Expert Garage Hack....https://www.facebook.com/steven.webber.948

In my earlier business we got some pretty nice things from our regular sub contractors so it is not foreign to me, however I never got a welder They toyed around putting it on a service truck over that year but it never happened and they just used their other welders. He actually did not request the money to hold it but I offered trying to let him know I was serious plus you know the riff faff you deal with on craigslist; did not want him getting cold feet since I cannot come for a week plus. I gave 4 for all of it, not a screaming deal but pretty fair I think considering it is pretty much brand new minus one year on the warranty. I have actually dealt with three of four people now that have near zero hours and one of them has had it for 8 months and has not even installed the exhaust pipe or turned it on.

Reply:Ill be sure to take some pictures (if I get it...don't wanna jinx it) of my new blue rig in the back of my big red truck and post it. Not that you guys have not seen a ton but it will a real treat for me. I think the sweetness of the whole thing has just been improved because I have waited sooo long.
Reply:Originally Posted by aapossienI agree, Miller makes welders not clothes or gloves. They allow their name to be put on cheap stuff. I have had good luck with BSX but see it in person before you buy. If you find it cheaper online that's a plus. I was given a Miller jacket and it fell apart in 2 weeks. Made in Pakistan. I also agree with 6010 and 7018, 3/32 and 1/8 will do most job nicely. 6013 is a waste, 6011 is ok but was originally made for AC welding. Burn up a box of rod practicing and you should be in pretty good shape.

Reply:I'm sure everyone will beat me up and have many different brands but I've found Lincoln the most consistent and I buy from welding supply stores. I think the turn over is probably greater so any chance of moisture or degradation is reduced. Just my opinion.

Reply:It doesn't look the best, but I bought a bbq grill cover at Lowes for$25 for my Hobart engine drive. It's to big for the machine, but a lot cheaper than $100 for one that says Miller on it. 2 years on it and it's held up well. |
