Hi guys,I attached a photo of the house I just got. The vertical posts need to be repainted at the very least, but then I had the idea to make new ones. The current ones are kinda el cheapo. Also, you can see that one of the shudders is broken. I'm thinking of just removing them as I think these plastic shudders are lame anyway. Anyone fab up something for their own house that would replace these?Cheers and thanks,Andy WPhoto:Last edited by engineer1984; 12-28-2014 at 08:09 PM.
Reply:I'll get better photos tomorrow. It's night time right now.(This was the MLS photo)
Reply:Porch posts will be easy to replace. I'd simply toss a bottle jack and a post under one side and jack it up enough to loosen up the existing post. You can then either put the new post in right away, or put in temporary posts while you work on the new ones. Screw type post jacks work well as temporary adjustable holders, or you can double up some 2x6's and birds mouth them and stake them in the yard at an angle if need be.Plenty of options for new posts. I've replaced them with welded steel columns similar to what you have already, or steel pipe, fiberglass columns you cut to length and hide the cuts with bases and capitals, or wood ones. Can't help you with suggestions on metal shutters. They do make some really nice heavy duty molded shutters that are a lot stronger than the cheap ones. I replaced 26 of the cheap ones on a house this past summer with the heavy duty ones. My supplier also had true wood shutters if I had wanted them, but they would have needed constant painting and maintenance as well as being a lot more money. A good independent lumber yard can probably give you options on these. I'd have to dig and see what brand we got. They are color thru and paintable if the customer later wanted to change colors ( not all "plastic" ones are paintable). Also they chose to change from louvered shutters like you have to panel style..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear.
