so the other day at work i got one of those out of the ordinary parts i allways get this is actually the part i was whining about in another thread....no welding its all machine work but it came out pretty cool. All my tolerances are +/- .0005 except the length and they generously gave me a whole .001" lol  for size comparison the paper its sitting on is standard 8.5x11 the end user is one of the big three auto manufacturers. Reply:Lol that's funny ink it goes in a plastic injection molder it still has some grooves that need to be put it it but the customer is going to do it ....its another machine shop but hey the end user is GM I was prety excited about that...... most of what I do goes out to the oil field
Reply:I had somebody try to sell me a mercury filled plumb bob once.  Said it would never swing twice.  I wish I had bought it, the price was right.
Reply:Yeah, injection molds are finicky.  Need to be spot-on.  A local place does lights-out machining in the wee hours so that floor vibrations from other machines don't muck things up."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:Bigger in Illinios. Use to make P Bobs at a little foundrey in town when I was a kid. Made out of aluminum, about a foot long and weighed in at 8 to 10 lbs. Used in grain bins to tell how full they were.
Reply:sorry still bigger in texas that ones over 18" lol ....even though its not really a plumb bob
Reply:Looks good.Does that part go on the end of an injection screw or is it for a mold? What is it made from?(4140,s7,d2,etc.)Miller a/c-d/c Thunderbolt XLMillermatic 180 Purox O/ASmith Littletorch O/AHobart Champion Elite
Reply:its 4140 and im not real sure how it all fits in to the injection molder but from looking at the print it looks like a "nozzel" but i dont know much bout injection molding. i do know it was a pita to machine because i didnt have a way to set the oal that made me feel good about it lol but hey i do what i can with what im given

Reply:oldendum yep thats what it will look like finished it gets some grooves that go along the length of the nose cone back to that collar.....from that picture it looks like i machined the whole assembly minus the  lateral grooves
Reply:I used to repair much smaller injection screws.Entire screw was maybe 24" You"done good"maintaining +/- .001  oal on an 18" nozzle. How were you measuring oal without removing it from chuck ?Miller a/c-d/c Thunderbolt XLMillermatic 180 Purox O/ASmith Littletorch O/AHobart Champion Elite
Reply:well i did the math to the shoulder of the bevel located that on the face of the jaws then measured the distance to the nose with the machine .then dobble checked the finished part on a cmm
Reply:I know this is an old thread and its not really about a plumb bob, but here's a real plumb bob I made. ~6lb's and >10" long. And no welding on this either.SteveCheck out MyShopNotes on youtube.

Reply:Our local university has a "clock" using a  "plumb bob" on the end of a very long cable. The plumb bob just swing back and forth all day long day after day on its 60'(ish) long cable. Its been awhile since I got to look at it but I remember the weight (plumb bob) was around 3' tall and about 1.5' across its widest part.12v battery, jumper cables, and a 6013.I only have a facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/pages/VPT/244788508917829
