Ok still learning how to tig coming along ok So today I was tigging on an antenna tower really thin material had some water get into it and froze and cracked So I reshaped it back together and tig welded the cracks up worked out fine BUTAt one point I forgot to take my foot off the peddle and some how the tig torch found my filler metal rod and went to it and my arm was resting on the tower Dang that hurt when my arm made connection to the towerNow other than being dumb is this a normal for a tig machine to do that or is there another problem going to show up later ?Just curioustrailblazer 302thunderbolt ac dc machine Hobart fluxcoreAHP tig 200x 2015

Reply:I've done that quite a few times. The worst was back when I was just starting, I was getting porosity in the weld so I stuck my hand I front of the tungsten and hit the pedal to make sure the gas was flowing, not my brightest moment
Reply:That's pretty common, especially if you start sweating a lot or your gloves get wet. I've hurt myself in probably every way you can with a TIG torch haha. Once I had a problem with my line pinching at the base of the torch handle, and I got a bit of porosity at the end of a bead, and for some reason put my just used rod in my hand with the torch and decided to listen for a leak in the line, and brought it up to my ear and stuck the hot end of the rod right on my cheek. That was a mistake I never made twice.
Reply:It's almost always the high frequency starter that gets you, it's harmless for the most part but will sure wake you up in a hurry!

Reply:Just wait until the day you're sitting at the table and set the torch in your lap and the still hot tungsten gets your inner thigh, or worse!
Reply:And just because your legs are under a welding bench, doesn't mean they are safe in shorts! I set the torch on the table to reposition the part, it slid off, the lead landed across my lap, the torch swung right down onto my calf and stayed there. I had the imprint of a #8 cup burned into my leg for months!

Reply:Quite often I throw the torch lead over my leg with the torch dangling between my legs while I change setups, move, or whatever. A few times now I had dropped a still hot tungsten against my leg, fun times!12v battery, jumper cables, and a 6013.I only have a facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/pages/VPT/244788508917829
Reply:Wow good story'sNow I know it's normal behavior for the tig machine I had thought it was the HF getting me thanks guys for cluing me in.trailblazer 302thunderbolt ac dc machine Hobart fluxcoreAHP tig 200x 2015
Reply:COOL ! It's all part of the experience .
Reply:If You get zapped and can continue on with the bead with no bobble, then You are a Master.

Reply:AC TIG on a transformer with continuous HF will get you almost every time exposed skin or wet clothes is just near grounded metal. You learn to enjoy it...
Reply:The other day I was welding my burner and was tilting it on a piece of wood and some how I got all the way on the wood and the ground was on the table. Went to do just 2 speed tacks and it spit and poped pretty good and I knew i must of had a back ground, then went too pick up my filler rod which was stainless and it was hot as shat and wasn't in my hand long, that 1/16 rod was my ground and I still have the burn on my fingers
Reply:I have gotten the hot tungsten in the leg before an more than once. I also go to run a Sync 250 at the last place that like to intermittently whack you with the high freq. That machine was always fun, never new when it was coming. Not sure what the problem was but I wasn't the only one it happened to.
Reply:The hot end of the filler on your lips are also really sensitive spot. Done that at least twice
Reply:I was making some inconel butt welds on a superheater panel couple of months ago and laid my torch on top of the panel and I was sitting underneath. The torch flopped over and the tungsten buried up in my cheek. Good thing is the tungsten is very sterile form the extreme Temps, it healed in just a few days but I bled like a stuck hog for a bit.
Reply:My instructor says it's good for arthritis.
Reply:Years ago I was repairing a dump truck and couldn't get at the right position to weld, I put my hand on the wet concrete floor and lit off the electrode and myself. No physical harm to me but my helper sure got a good laugh. |
