Any one snip the half inch of the black crap of ur filler rod with dikes? Also how about for aluminum rod? I can see the crap floating in the puddle if I don't snip it. I always wipe the rod down first with acetone. There's so much crap on them!

Reply:im no aluminum guru i have tigged very little.with stainless it is good practice, but i seldom do it. ideally, the rod should never leave gas coverage when hot. occasionally mine does and that is when i will snip.some of the best welders i have seen dont go anywhere without their dikes. they snip before each weldbosses stuff:trailblazer 325maxstar 200my stuff:sa 200fronius transpocket 180100 amp Lincoln w/f97 f350 DITKevin

Reply:I do not normally have soot on my filler rod between beads. If I did see any contamination I would clean it off or cut off that piece. It's quicker to snip off a piece. I store the acetone and rags far from my welding table.Dan----------------------------Measure twice. Weld once. Grind to size.MIG: Lincoln SP100 TIG/STICK: AHP Alphatig 200X

Reply:I clean them with acetone before even welding bc they get oil on them from the factory. So do u guys hold the rod under the cup when the welder is post flowing? And is the how you get no black soot on there?

Reply:I've never personally done this at home or in the shop. I was working in the field repairing leaks in a tube sheet on a heat exchanger. Wire. was 70S-6 and there was an inspector there who wanted each piece of wire wiped down with scotchbrite to remove the copper coating, and after each stop had to cut the wire back about a 1/2 inch. Never had it happen again.
Reply:Quick guess with no pics would be a bad torch angle. Without pics if everything is on the money that would be my guess. Like said "guess".I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys

Reply:I always clip my ends. Can't remember the last time I used acetone on anything. Occasionally I'll wipe the wire with my shirt tail.

Reply:I've said it so many times the filler rods are coverd in gunk. The proof is the the rage. I do it every time now and wipe it like 3 times. And there the owners anyway. Not that it really maters any way or nore does pay. A lot of poeple like to sound like a know it all
Reply:I think what you might be seeing has to do with the copper. Even clean copper if you rub it for awhile you will get a blackish residue off of it.12v battery, jumper cables, and a 6013.I only have a facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/pages/VPT/244788508917829

Reply:If I look at the ends of my used copper coated 70S filler I see that the copper has burned away. It does not appear to be soot. It does not wipe away with a wet cloth. Dan----------------------------Measure twice. Weld once. Grind to size.MIG: Lincoln SP100 TIG/STICK: AHP Alphatig 200X

Reply:If you work with aluminum you need to alcohol it off then sand it. If you sand it then alcohol it does no good. If you sand stuff with trash and dont wipe it off first it bed the grit and garbage into the metal. I don't snip my aluminum wire. If your seeing crap in the puddle when welding aluminum clean the aluminum, wire brush it with a stainless brush. Always snipe the ends off carbon, stainless, and titanium.Miller Maxstar 200 SDPiperliner #10 Gold
Reply:You mean just the end of the rod where that white crap is or the whole rod. And do u you scotch bright? If so wich one? Is alcohol better then acetone on aluminum filler rod?
