Reply:A very consistent weld that has good fusion/wetting at the toes, isn't too convex/concave. Lots of things to look at when welding and when it all comes together correctly it can be a beautiful thing.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG
Reply:Asthetically, a beautiful weld would be one that has a perfect "stack of dimes" look.Realistically, I feel the most beautiful weld is one that holds the best, or ones that may save my life. Im all for something looking nice, but Id rather trust something that looks like dripping syrup thats got great fusion than a stack of dimes with no penetration.
Reply:It's sorta like girlwatching. You will know one when you see one. If it makes your tongue hard, it's pretty, it you chip your teeth with it and get tears in your eyes, it's beautiful Last edited by wornoutoldwelder; 11-24-2014 at 12:08 PM.
Reply:It seems difficult to tell how much penetration is under the bead so maybe some ugly welds really have "inner beauty" ??millermatic 130XPharbour freight 180 amp mig with added caps.hobart stickmate ac/dcpowerarc 200

Reply:Here is my stack of dimes. At least part of this looks good to me. It was on a rough piece of scrap that I run test beads on. Reply:A beautiful weld is one that is perfect and has all the characteristics of a good sound weld. Penetration, uniformity, wets in nice at the toes and no inclusions or imperfections. How you go about getting those results all depends on process desired or demanded. Appearance can vary like ice cream flavors. We are all individuals and so is every process. I have many perfect friends, yet all there personalities are different. Kind of a very broad question.I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:A stacked of dimes look is good for 6010/6011 or TIG but not so much for any other rods.

Reply:Turismolover22, a weld with good fusion and that will do what it's supposed to will be beautiful. One that looks like runny syrup will break if you look at it wrong.

Reply:Originally Posted by wornoutoldwelderAbsolutely NOT true!A "runny syrup" looking Mig weld without undercut and cold bulge and/or speed/feed faults is the result of both a talented welder and a machine that is hot nuff to perform spray xfer. Such welds are usually only seen performed by a well dialed in automated process in a controlled environ, or a talented welder using proper equipment capable of spray transfer for that thickness who possesses the knowledge, experience and skills necessary to master it.A properly applied runny syrup looking weld results in a joint that offers no extra stress risers like usually found in those pretty stack a dimes looking welds we ALL so love,  where in a runny syrup weld the HAZ can be better managed and more easily compensated for when calculating pre/post weld heat treatment and the cost/weight saving ability to use thinner materials and faster process with fewer reworks and test failures.A consistent "runny syrup" welder can nail a better paying job anywhere, especially in a production shop that produces large runs of items where appearance is important and the bean counters examine the whole process looking for penny savings per item and QA is important and the owner is reluctant to invest in and pay to maintain an automated system where they might change customers and products overnight or before the automated sys can pay for itself.
Reply:i can always tell a beautiful weld. even in the dark. it smells like money.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny flaOriginally Posted by MinnesotaDaveThat's what broke guys say to strippers....at least that's what weldermike told me he does....
Reply:Originally Posted by welderjames85Maybe I misinterpreted the idea of a runny syrup bead. A pic would be very helpful. In my mind I see a bead that's all lumpy and inconsistent.
Reply:I've only done spray transfer once and have no idea if my bead was even good or not. It had ripples more elongated than a stack of dimes. Is that what yall mean by a runny syrup bead?
Reply:I got a 95 on it. It was in class
Reply:I like a smooth weld. Stack of dimes may look nice but those waves in the weld surface can become stress risers.

Reply:yesterday i had to build up a 1 1/4" plate with 7024. when the plate heated up a bit those beads burned into each other and the plate with finely spaced ripples that was very pleasing to the eye. i never have a camera when i need one.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:A good welder
Reply:Heres a few pics I have saved of a few different processes and techniques. Like stated, it's really a broad question, and all depends on the job, the conditions or what is demanded. There's a time and place for everything, being well rounded and practiced will always go a long way for whatever gets thrown at you. Me personally, I always feel not up to par due to there is so much more I wish I had time to either learn or improve on.I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:A few more. It basically comes down to a lot of variables of what job and whats preferred. This is kind of a topic that could get taled about forever. Although some pics I posted may look the sameish, they are all different styles of welding to get similar to the eye results, but they are all different. Gotta run. Happy Thanksgiving guys!
