Hello all,So I work for a company that manufactures tow dollies, towing products, and other misc. contract products. We currently do not use industry standard weld symbols, weld procedure specifications, etc. Our weld test for new hires consists of putting a couple pieces of metal in front of them and essentially saying "have fun" while watching over their shoulder. My question is this: is there a standard that would apply to a manufacturer of small(ish) mechanical parts? The things I find when I look up welding standards are AWS D1.1 and etc. From what little I have read and seen this does not apply to us. Would we be better off creating our own standards to test to/qualify weld procedures to?Any input would be helpful.ThanksRybot
Reply:Crazy.
Reply:This will be very interesting to learn from! We always worked to AWS D1.1. If not, we had a hand full of PE engineers to do the thinking for us. Without a PE, or at the least a CWI I don't know how you would go about it. Gonna set back and learn something from this thread!Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:I would call AWS, explain the situation, and ask them directly.  There is also at least one national organization of trailer manufacturers -- might get in touch with them as well.  You don't want a misinformed answer from an internet forum getting you in more hot water later on....sounds like you're already there now!
Reply:I've seen a lot of production on shop floor(s) that do not use the type symbols or designations on fabrication prints. These are the prints supplied to the production floor. It has always been small production type, or "job" shops operating in this atmosphere. However on the "master" type prints, these symbols and denotations are used extensively. In your application, I don't know for certain, but product liability insurance in adequate quantity is hard to obtain on manufactured items if the items are not quantified to meet existing safety standards. This can be rough when it concerns manufactured goods operated upon roadways.Tbone is correct in to not trust an internet forum for legal advice although it may be accurate. I would seek legal counsel for answers to your questions. Thanks,SlobPurveyor of intimate unparalleled knowledge of nothing about everything.Oh yeah, also an unabashed internet "Troll" too.....

Reply:The old Mil-Specs were pretty easy. You could Google up Mil-W-8611 for free, and print it out. It has all of the basics that AWS-D1.1 uses.Years ago Mil-W-8611 was super ceded by Mil-STD-2219, then that was super ceded by AMS-STD-2219, then that was super ceded by AWS D17.1 and AWS D 1.1.Your company can also buy prequalified SWPS for a couple hundred each and apply to specific weld joints. Once you figure what you do most, you could have each weldor test for that in house. You could also Google go "weld symbol chart" and print that out. Shows what the symbols mean.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.

Reply:Every "WELDOR" should be forced to download and memorize Mil-STD-1595A.Last edited by shovelon; 12-13-2014 at 10:15 AM.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
