I have an older Makita 4-1/2" angle grinder. It has the rubber pad for grinding discs and lock nut but no other hardware. I want to use it with a cut-off wheel but it appears I need a different flange and lock nut. I've searched but can't find the parts I need.Has anyone here done this before? Can you tell me what parts I need to use a cut-off wheel on this angle grinder?
Reply:New grinders always come with the parts you're talking about. Go into your local hardware store and ask. My local store has them in stock. They seem to get lost fairly often. You can also get them on ebay, amazon, etc.inner flange part no. 224399-1lock nut part no. 224568-4Last edited by fortyonethirty; 09-20-2012 at 03:53 PM.Ian TannerKawasaki KX450 and many other fine tools
Reply:I imagine if its an old makita, it has a very small maybe 3/8 thread on it. If so I have one like it. I had to machine both pieces to make it work. Mac
Reply:I saw some small thread to big thread adapters at Northern Tool.  Cheap enough."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:Thread adapter is not the problem - it has a 5/8"-11 arbor.I'll look into the flange and lock nut that fortyonethirty recommended.
Reply:Buy a new Grinder- you need more than one anyway Keep the Cut off disc on one and the grinding discs on the other.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge

Reply:Just turn the threaded collar over and it will tighten to the cutting disc. It has a slight indention in it to let the collar go on a little further and tighten to the thinner disc. Every Makita I own is like that. I own eleven and the oldest is 30 years old and it's like that.

Reply:I "redneck reload" on grinders too. It is just too tempting to try to 'grind' that last little bit with a cutoff wheel to save from switching the disk over.  Maybe others are more disciplined than I?  Give me a hammer and everything looks like a nail!Harbor Freight Inverter 130 amp DC stick/tig (sold, really!)Lincoln Square Wave Tig 175 AC/DC stick/Tig
Reply:When I am banging out a job I will have one grinder with a hard wheel on it, another with the wire wheel, and sometimes a straight grinder with a carbide. All three of them with in reach, when time is money tools are cheap.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:I have a small makita and have used it for cutoff wheels for years ( its prob 25 years old). This unit has been fully underwater in a flood, and although it never sounded the same it works good still. I sometimes buy cutoff wheels now that are so thin that  they just spin on the shaft. The fix was to use a hose washer under the nut. You may not need that idea just keep it in the fileing cabinet.Miller thunderbolt 250Decastar 135ERecovering tool-o-holic ESAB OAI have been interested or involved in Electrical, Fire Alarm, Auto, Marine, Welding, Electronics ETC to name a just a few. Reply:it takes me between 5-30min. just to remember where I left the arbor wrench.
Reply:There's no reason to wrench on a grinding/cutting wheel. Just spin it on by hand and it'll self tighten when in use. Then to remove just hold the lock button and spin it off by hand.Welding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com

Reply:Yep, you can never have enough of them. Like stated, have 3 plugged into a three way ready to use. They are like tape measures and gloves, never have enough, and they should be scattered all over the place. I hate looking for ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!  NEED MANY OF EVERYTHING!
Reply:Here is a pic of the makita adaptor for flat cut-off disc. The small center cup is for cut-off disc and the large backing plate is for depressed center grinding disc. Attached Images
Reply:Tha is exactly what I need!I didn't see anything like that at Home Depot. I suppose a welding supply store would have it?
Reply:Being in Dallas, I'm sure you can locate a shop that specializes in small tool repair.  They usually have all kinds of parts like that.  Just call around.
