I was thinkin of a cheap home made rod oven, heres my idea: old small icechest with a hole in it and a light fixture going in the hole then kaulk around the light fixture to keep heat from escaping. whats yalls opinions on this idea?Mullets&Pullets
Reply:People have been using them since the beginning of time. A small refrigerator works well too.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:i did the old refrigerator/floodlight thing and even built a special purpose box/floodlight oven. it was a dud so finally had to bite the bullet and bought one. i hope you have better results.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:Used ones often go $50-$75 - for that money I'd just buy a used one. That's what I did and I'm happy with the purchase.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:yeah dave I was thinking about doin that in the future but fixing to have to spend my cash on a stick welder and I saw the small icechest with the light into it layin in the shop (we had tried to make a chicken incubator out of it) and figured id ask if it would be of use rod wise.Mullets&Pullets
Reply:Ours at work is an old 40's fridge with a heat lamp bulb in it. Works well, thermometer sits right at 275° all the time.
Reply:My friend uses a pizza oven with the timer disconnected, it reaches temperatures of over 450 degrees as his wife's cooking thermometer only goes up to 450. He then uses the rods to weld with or places them in air tight rod containers. It does seem to work as I was at his shop last week and steam was pouring out of the oven full of 7018 rods that had been sitting around in open containers. The pizza rack is a perfect size for welding rods, he bought it off Craigslist for 25 dollars.
Reply:We use old microwaves off the curb, just hotwire the bulb and use a 100 watt, works like a champ
Reply:Code requirements for low hy electrode storage call for temps of 250f. Any less than that and your just wasting energy.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:And that 250F is just for storage of the rods. For redrying rods that have picked up moisture you may need temperatures as high as 750-800Fhttp://www.lincolnelectric.com/en-us...es-detail.aspxhttp://www.lincolnelectric.com/asset...ure/mc1578.pdfGood luck with your fridge and lightbulb, I think the fridge will melt

Reply:I can't remember if my ovens are set at 250, or 350 degrees and are not adjustable but I keep all my XX18 series rods in them, (Phoenix Brand) and they're always hot. I'm pretty certain they are only 150 watts and power easily from a cheap Schumacher inverter when in the truck enroute to a job. At about 60 pounds each when full they are easy to load, strap in, and go. Never worried about 7018 being dry prior to several conversations on this web site concerning them so acquired two ovens and always use them now. Have I noticed a difference? No. I however only do field repair type work, nothing production or inspectable except by me and the the equipment owner. If they're happy, I'm happy but I've not had anything come apart in many years I've been doing this type of work.SlobPurveyor of intimate unparalleled knowledge of nothing about everything.Oh yeah, also an unabashed internet "Troll" too.....
Reply:250 degrees is the minimum for code compliant low hy electrode storage. Some ovens are set at 350. Noting wrong with that.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:You will need to have a vent hole towards the top for humidity to escape.  I have used an old fridge for 20 years with a 60 watt spiral florescent bulb. The bulb has been going 24 hours a day for 10 years.ChrisAuction Addict
Reply:Does a fluorescent bulb give off any heat? Anything that's makes the rods warm to the touch where you can't hold with bare hands will help, especially if the rods are in there and it's turned on all the time. Unless you're doing the most critical code work, the temperature of the oven doesn't make a whole lot of difference. Having the rods hot will make them weld nicer but for 95% of jobs it won't matter if they're hot or not as long as they are dry.
