mig welding 30mm to 40mm

got some weldeing to do to make a jig tomorrow 500mm across and  30mm thick to a 40mm thick platei dont know how many passes it should be with the mig. im guessing 1 route and a capping is no good, how many welds will i need to do and how big should the lrg lengths bedoes any body know or have a better guess than me ?regards
