Hello, I'm looking for an old (preferably 1970 to present) AC-225 Tombstone. I've been stuck with small 110v welders for too long, and I'd like to get a welder that is indestructible. Plus, i'm starting to get serious with welding, and want a machine with power! I'd like to see an on site demo (just a quick bead to see that it works).I can only pick up local (within the Central NJ or Eastern PA area. My zip code is 08610).PM with pics, or call 609-731-8551 (my cell) for any offers. I have $150. -Alex Costanzo-AlexSears/Craftsman 230A Buzzy BoxSears/Craftsman 180A Buzzy BoxChicago Electric 80A InverterALL STICK...ALL THE TIME!I spent a lot of time with the square peg and round hole.

Reply:As things are right now, I might just get a new ac225, though I've read the quality isn't as good as the old machines. I took a look at the miller  and I just don't think it would work out. Whenever I weld, I have to lug the welding cart (an old homemade wooden Wagon) from the shed to the backyard. not easy, and looking at the size of the miller, it seems like it would be impossible.  I received late cards from a coulple of relatives and sold my old commodore 64 (remember them Haha) and now have a total of $240. Unless something else comes up, I think I'll just spend the $300 for a new one.-AlexSears/Craftsman 230A Buzzy BoxSears/Craftsman 180A Buzzy BoxChicago Electric 80A InverterALL STICK...ALL THE TIME!I spent a lot of time with the square peg and round hole.
Reply:Let me see what I can dig up for you. I've got an old AC Craftsman stick machine in the garage I'll let go inexpensively. It's one of the old plug types but it works well. I used it for years before I got my AC/DC Thunderbolt.I may also have a line on a "newer" craftsman stick machine, that used to belong to a friend of mine who passed away. Not sure exactly what condition or model it is off the top of my head.I might also think about letting the Thunderbolt go as well, but I'd want more for that unit. It runs, but it has a few minor issues I simply haven't bothered to deal with since I got my Syncrowave. I keep that at the shop as my emergency machine for plow repairs. Not sure I want to let it go just yet.I'll Pm you tomorrow if I get the chance to go up to the shop and dig out the 2nd Craftsman..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Thanks again for the offers.  Send a PM or call me ans we can work out an offer.-Alex-AlexSears/Craftsman 230A Buzzy BoxSears/Craftsman 180A Buzzy BoxChicago Electric 80A InverterALL STICK...ALL THE TIME!I spent a lot of time with the square peg and round hole.
Reply:for 300 bucks I would take that 330ABP miller in a heartbeat.  had one and its an awesome welder... Just ask Zapster.   hell the pedal alone is worth $150 bucksFYI that machine weighs 850lbs not 500 and is packed full of copper...  the newer AC 225 lincolns use aluminum instead of copper winding hence why the older ones are better...  If you are getting serious then you really want at least a DC machine of some typeLast edited by soutthpaw; 12-29-2011 at 08:29 PM.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:Yes, that miller is a damn good deal, but it would would just be impractacle. I know I'll be kicking myself when I finally do get an actual shop for welding, but for now, I just can't.  Besides, a few diodes and caps and I could have a decent dc welder out of one of those craftsmans.-AlexSears/Craftsman 230A Buzzy BoxSears/Craftsman 180A Buzzy BoxChicago Electric 80A InverterALL STICK...ALL THE TIME!I spent a lot of time with the square peg and round hole.

Reply:I grabbed a few picts. Still need to check to make sure both units work properly. Probably might get a chance to do that this weekend if I'm lucky and the weather holds.I'll try and dig up the exact models later. My 1st AC stick machine. 180 amp AC only. Plug style unit. Worked perfect the last time I used it maybe 6 or 8 years ago when I took these picts. It's buried in the garage right now. Leads were in good shape from what I remember, no cracks at the time. Some rust on the feet from what I recall. I bought the unit used and I think it had sat on the floor of the garage and the feet had gotten wet at some point. Case was in very good shape, inside at that time was in good shape no rust that I remember. I cleaned it all out well when I opened it up then. Probably would like to get $75 for the unit. Honestly I'd like it out of the garage as it's taking up space I could use for other things. This is the one that used to belong to my buddy. It's got 2  settings, high and low and is infinitely variable between them. AC only unit, goes up to 230 amps IIRC. Leads are in very good shape, no cracks or breaks, look almost brand new. Ground clamp is a little cheesy, but the stinger is nice, both original I believe. The plastic that covered the face is pealing a bit, but that's just the clear top coat. All the writing underneath is clear and readable. Almost no rust on the unit I can see, despite being stored in the shop and in his garage for who knows how long. Unit adjusted fine when I moved it today, but I still need to test it at various settings plugged in. I'd like to see his widow get a decent number on this to help her with her two kids. I'm thinking $175 right now, but will make a final decision after I get a chance to look it over well and run some beads to verify it runs correctly. The price is on the high side of fair compared to most AC tombstones I see offered on CL. Those are only tapped machines however and this one is infinitely variable, a nice plus.I'll have to hunt around and see if I have any junk rods I can toss in I've saved to help guys learn to weld. I know there's probably some old 7018 out there, not sure if it's AC or not. Might have some 6013 still. I think I burned up a lot of it last year though. Most of my rods I know of off the top of my head are 6010 ( DC ONLY ), and some larger 5/32" rods that are probably too big for both machines. I'll need to dig some. I can probably turn up a small amount of scrap as well to F with. Mostly stuff other guys have welded on. I'll try and see if a guy I know has any decent scrap I can snag to practice on as well. If we get into the 2nd or 3rd week of January I might be able to scrounge up some more from the scrap barrel at the tech school.I'll PM you my contact info when I get a chance to go over both units..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Okay,  once they're tested out and working PM me and we can work out a deal. I'm more in the ballpark of $200 for both machines. If you don't get around to checking them this weekend, its alright. Me and Dad still have to install the 220 to power it.  We'll probably do that in mid january.-Alex-AlexSears/Craftsman 230A Buzzy BoxSears/Craftsman 180A Buzzy BoxChicago Electric 80A InverterALL STICK...ALL THE TIME!I spent a lot of time with the square peg and round hole.
