Just passed my 3G Stick certification last week, and I've been practicing on MIG since. I'm writing up a resume now, but I was wondering if y'all had any advice on what sort of jobs are good to start in? As in, what should I be looking for to get more experience in the field, are there any jobs I should avoid? At the moment I'm ready to take what I can get because I need the money, but if I get offered something and there are much better options, I'd like to know. Also, I've been told that pay for someone just getting into welding usually starts around $16-18 an hour. Is this about right for what I'm gonna be able to get? Thanks in advance for any advice and replies, they're very much appreciated.
Reply:I don't think you'll see $16-18 an hour just starting out with stick and mig at a shop, but could get in the $20's pretty easily if you try to get on some contract jobs. You'll most likely need to travel to get a good one. You'll want to look up jobs looking for a structural welders most likely. I've always done aerospace and pipe with TIG/stick so don't know too much about jobs in that field, but I see the listings a lot. Roadtechs.com is one site that had a lot of those job listings.
