Hey guys, I've looked around here trying to figure out my answer but still haven't found it.  I just ordered a Thermal Arc 161 Stl.  My first project for it will be putting in a top rail on a pipe fence at my uncle's ranchette.  The problem is the closest power source (the house) would be 200' to the farthest point I'll be welding (lots of extension cords and would probably get SUPER hot).  The second option is possibly using a 4000 watt generator.  My question is will the generator supply enough wattage running my welder with the 115v plug?  I'm not exactly sure the exact calculation to find this...I know watts= Volts X Amps  so is it as simple as saying 115V times say 75 amps = 8,625watts?   This seems really high and that's why I'm not sure if I would be able to do this or not.
Reply:You ought to be OK with a 20 amp input circuit.  Your output voltage will be much lower, like 24V.The manual for the 161STL calls for 20 amp input on 115VAC.
Reply:The manual recommends a 30 amp breaker for maximum output. 20 amp should work depending on your process. I'd use a use a 10 gauge extension cord. In 200' you'll have about 6.5 volts drop. The manual also states you can use a generator and and gives some recommendation. Here's the snippits. Attached Images
Reply:We just got a 161 STL and started playing with it.  Ran an 1/8" 6011 at about 100A on a 120V, 20A breaker seemingly fine.  Of course you have to watch the duty cycle of these little welders."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder

Reply:Although we've only played a couple minutes with the 161 STL, it is kinda scary what it can do on a 120V, 20A outlet.  Impressive so far."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder

Reply:Yup,The 161 is amazing.  The 95S is no slouch either.  I've used it now for many a day with 3/32 and 1/8 6011 and 7018 without a hiccup at max amps.  Never an overheat or a popped 20 amp breaker, never.  My Arcmaster 300 runs off a 50 amp 240V and can be operated at 300 amps output with no problems.  I guess you can see I'm fond of TAs.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum
Reply:I think he means the Miniarc 161 LTS.http://esabna.com/us/en/products_cat...Product_ID=819Power Factor @ Max Current 0.73Efficiency @ Max Current  0.8The ESABs are pretty well priced at the moment - around $515. for the stick and $625. with a TIG torch.  http://www.scottgrossstore.com/servl...LTS/CategoriesThe TA 161STL does have some nice features:  gas valve, arc force setting, 2T/4T and adjustable down slope. Great deal if you get one at $650. from IOC.  Don't hesitate too long.Last edited by Oldendum; 10-20-2012 at 08:39 AM."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:Thanks you two.I looked at that Esab, and am not sure it really compares.  I believe it lacks a gas solenoid which puts the TA in front for the features I'm looking for.Lincoln SA 200Esab Caddy 160Thermal Arc 201TSMiller Dialarc HFI don't like making plans for the day because then the word "premeditated" gets thrown around the courtroom....
