Gentlemen--I have a few pieces of 4x4" 1/4"wall tubing that I would like to fab up into a nice little bench hydraulic press.  These pieces would be the uprights that would have the holes for pins for the table.  I am thinking like 1 or 1.25 pins into channel for the table.  Here's my question, I'd like 20 tons such that I could bend 1/8 plate 12" long.  Would these 4x4"s do the job could I go higher in tonnage?  As always I greatly appreciate the words of wisdom.
Reply:Based on my Harbor Freight 20 ton press, those are overkill. Mine has C channel sides, 2" x 4" x .2". The holes in it are .82" diameter or so. I imagine with those and 1.25" pins you could easily handle 30 tons, probably 40 tons. Those are basically double the size of mine, 1.25" pins are double the area of mine.Lincoln 175HD
Reply:20 tons? For rough 'ciperin'  let's guess that actual pin-to-tube contact is 1/4" x 1", for an area of .25" x 2 holes  = .50" area of contact.(I'm tossing one wall of the tube out of the equation because I think that pin deflection will minimize loading on the "far" side of the tube.)So, with 100,000# steel x .50" that would give a working limit of 50,000# or 25 ton.But... the tube is more like half of that capacity, so we're down to 12.5 ton.But... contact area may be greater than .25", and the "far side" will help some, so we're back up to at least 20 ton.Anyway, I'd say it's close for the 20 ton application, but with not a lot of surplus capacity.Good Luck
