I am thinking about getting an AC-225, but I do not have a 50A service to the garage. If I where to hook it up to a 20A or 30A service, what would be the limitations?
Reply:The breaker will be tripping when you ask the machine to draw beyond that 20-30 amp source limit. If you keep the demand under the limit of the supply breaker, then it won't trip, but who can say at what point that threshold lies? It is possible to determine that point, either by trial and error, or by testing on a known good circuit with an ammeter.City of L.A. Reply:I was hoping there would be some rule of thumb For example 3/8" = X Amps, 1/4" = Y Amps.
Reply:Been there. done that with a 30A. You can still get useful work done. No ROT available, but I did it everywhere I lived until I bought a place, and still use the adapter pigtail now and then.
Reply:After a while you get use to the sound of that ol buzz box...I've ran mine off a 30a for 20 years...I can tell within 2-3 seconds as when to lift and break the arc to keep the breaker from tripping just from the sound as to how hard the welder is pulling amps.Over the years ive sure built a lot of great projects so in a long drawn out answer...yes it can be done.Victor O/A SetHF Band SawHomebuilt 16" Abrasive Cutoff SawRed 225 Buzz BoxCraftsman 5hp. 30gal Sears and Robuck LeathDelta 6" Vert.
