Anyone have one of those 250 $ grinders they sell on ebay? Are they any good?Sent from my SM-G920P using Tapatalk
Reply:No but I was looking at the one Milwaukee makes, nice wishing I did
Reply:I'd be interested to know how long the diamond wheel lasts on those hand helds. I've only used DGP piranha II, which works great--but costs $$$, and the replacement wheels are steep too.
Reply:What's wrong with a bench grinder with a proper stone. In welding school we had to learn on a bench grinder even when they had dedicated tungsten grinders. Instructors told the students we most likely will have to use a bench grinder when we enter the working world.

Reply:I have one of the handhelds ... Tecweld or something like that ... got it from the LWS in 2008.  I works pretty well, but it is slow.  The wheels last a good long while as long as you adjust it out of the bare spots on the wheel.  The wheels are also double sided.  I prefer the DGP Pirhana III ... they are absolutely amazing for consistency and speed.  The bench grinder comes second.  The hand held comes last because of how slow it is, the cost, and the cost of the replacement wheels.but for the field ... if you need a dedicated grinder, they are better than using an angle grinder.AWS CWI xxxx21711968 SA200  Originally Posted by WelderMike  I hate being bipolar, It's awesome.

Reply:No experience with the eBay ones but I have used a couple Piranah II grinders and they work very nicely. A 6" (200 grit?) Diamond wheel on a bench grinder is a close second, but a regular bench grinder will work ok too. At home I just use a regular bench grinder and it suits my needs just fine. If I was going to upgrade I would buy a 6" diamond wheel for $120ish and call it good. For what I do I can't really justify the cost of a Piranah II or similar.Found this company with a quick google search.  http://diamond-grinding-wheel.com/#wheel  pretty similar to the wheel I used although I dont remember the brand name.Sent from my S4 using Tapatalk1988 Big 50 Diesel CC/CV1982 Weldanpower 225/2101968 SAE 300 motor generatorMaxstar 200SD2015 AHP 200x"The trouble with our Liberal friends is not that they're ignorant; it's just that they know so much that isn't so." - Ronald Reagan
Reply:You can just use a 4.5" grinder and black wheel then polish it with a flap wheel
Reply:There's a product called a stilo tig electrode sharpener. It's way over priced IMO at $90 I use a harbor freight circular saw sharpener with a bunch of stuff taken off of it. At less than $50 it's a bargain for the shop and it works great. Came with a diamond wheel and there's a bunch of surface area on the wheel to use before its worn out. Blades are pretty cheap too at $10. Sent from my dumb smartphoneTeach Ag Mech - Mike At Home:Lincoln Electric AC225Miller Challenger 172Gas AxeWork:eclectic bunch of 90's vintage blue boxes

Reply:Anyone have a tool to hold the tungsten while youre using the bench grinder?  I cut my tungsten in half(splintering some of them) and I was using my silver pencil to hold the tungsten while sharpening but it melted the plastic pencil.

Reply:How ever you decide to go makes sure you don't grind anything but your tungsten on the grinder. Grinding other material will contaminate it.

Reply:HeyTM, would you mind taking a couple more pics of your setup from different angles, and one from a little further back so I can see what you took off.  That really looks like a good alternative to those high dollar grinders. Thanks! Reply:I use a table top bench belt sander to grind new rods to a 15 to 90 degree point depending on the job then finish and renew the point on the diamond wheel bench grinder. Then when feeling excessively pedantic I just might polish them on a polishing wheel. While holding the tungsten in the smallest cheapest cordless drill I can find.Last edited by mad welder 4; 03-05-2016 at 11:11 AM.old Miller spectrum 625 Lincoln SP-135 T, CO2+0.025 wireMiller model 250 and WP-18V torchCraftsman 100amp AC/DC and WP-17V torchCentury 115-004 HF arc stabilizerHome made 4 transformer spot welderHome made alternator welder

Reply:Just FYI the HF diamond wheels are rated at 6600 rpm and a standard 4.5" angle grinder is around double that.1988 Big 50 Diesel CC/CV1982 Weldanpower 225/2101968 SAE 300 motor generatorMaxstar 200SD2015 AHP 200x"The trouble with our Liberal friends is not that they're ignorant; it's just that they know so much that isn't so." - Ronald Reagan
Reply:I used an angle grinder with a router speed control to slow it down for a while.  I've been using a bench grinder but I think I prefer the grinder if I can get the diamond wheel to work.  Here's what I used to control the speed….Miller Diversion 165 TIGMillermatic 211/141 with Auto-SetHobart Stickmate LX235 AC/DC StickNorthern Tool 135 MIG & Dry Cut SawKlutch ST80i/ST200i Stick/TigGrizzly G9742 BandsawMilwaukee Circular Steel Saw/Portaband/SWAG Offroad Table
Reply:I bought the hand held grinder offered by usawelds.com when I bought their HTP tig machine..That sucker wasn't cheap but it works really well.If I had been more experienced. I would have bought a small, inexpensive bench grinder and did was was depicted above...Slap an very inexpensive diamond wheel on it, drill a hole in grinder guard and be done with it...In fact, I'd slap another diamond wheel on other side of same grinder with hole in different location for different angles. Then drop sewn cover over it to protect it from dirt and prevent use except when grinding tungsten.P.S. you guys be careful when grinding tungsten by hand. I've see them buried deeply in hands and forearms when the guys were using angle grinders with one hand on grinder and the other holding tungsten.Last edited by wornoutoldwelder; 03-06-2016 at 08:14 AM.
Reply:Not sure what you guys are looking at, but this is rated 14,500, and it is 5/8 arbor which you can knock out the adapter ring in the middle to get the 7/8 for a standard grinder.Last edited by TheBFA; 03-06-2016 at 09:07 AM.

Reply:I used my cordless drill to hold my tungsten as recommended and spun it on a bench grinder and holy **** it grinds it so much easier than me turning it by hand.   Thats my go to now.  Now more tearing up gloves or mechanical marking pencils.  I was really surprised at how fast that worked.
Reply:It's a good habit to move the tungsten around when you do that to keep the wheel dressed. I'm not a big fan of other people at work that keep digging grooves into the wheels. It's kind of hard to not use a groove to keep it steady when doing it by hand, but when using the drill, it's pretty easy to move around and still maintain a consistent angle.Last edited by TheBFA; 03-16-2016 at 12:20 AM.
Reply:Well, I sprung for a hand held tungsten grinder. In fact I sprung even higher for the Milwaukee cordless version. It wasn't cheap, but it works like a champ and I am happy with the purchase.Miller Diversion 165 TIGMillermatic 211/141 with Auto-SetHobart Stickmate LX235 AC/DC StickNorthern Tool 135 MIG & Dry Cut SawKlutch ST80i/ST200i Stick/TigGrizzly G9742 BandsawMilwaukee Circular Steel Saw/Portaband/SWAG Offroad Table
Reply:you could make one.  Made this for about $75 ($50 for the wheel, and $25 for the switch, switch boot, switch box, and arbor attachment).  The motor is out of a garage door opener, scrap steel for the mounting bracket, scrap wood for the base, and a repurposed appliance cord.  Motor doesn't have a great duty cycle (use something other than a garage door opener motor if you need a better duty cycle, like a washing machine or dryer motor).
