My sa250 perkins '92 model will not arc. Only spark. Worked like a champ yesterday for 12 hours and today i fire it up to run som BS stuff as a little odd job til next test as it only creates a small spark. barely noticable. a buddy said get a commutator stone but my commutator looks clean. really dont want to throw a bunch of money at this but will if i have to. can yall tell me what my next best option is? yes i have aux power.
Reply:gee i got a little HF $200. inverter welder and it always works for me but i will not say anything against the manufacturer of your welder
Reply:cant really run pipeline with a small welder tom hahaha

Reply:Seeing as you have auxiliary power output, start by checking the Fine Voltage Control rheostat for an open winding or poor connection at its terminals.  You should see 64ohms +/- from one end of the windings to the other.  Put it in the 100 positon to avoid a false reading or disconnect its center lead before testing.Check your REMOTE/LOCAL switch, its connections and wires to/from it.  I've found a broken wire at the R/L switch before that prevented weld output when there was still auxiliary power.Last edited by duaneb55; 03-21-2016 at 02:19 PM.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:Originally Posted by WNY_TomB.many new inverters will run of any generator although no guarantee as some inverters and some generators do not get along, if you have separate generators (2nd is backup) and separate welders (again 2nd is backup) then if one does not work switch to backups..he would need a inverter with enough duty cycle at amps he is welding that will weld continuously though. inverter welders are relatively cheap in price. having backup cost relatively little.he probably can rent a generator for a week relatively easy too

Reply:thanks guys, the rheostat is good, I cleaned it with a paper towel, cleaned the brushes and exciter armature. will look into wiring next. I broke the switch off a couple weeks ago. maybe that's my issue
Reply:another question, in the exciter, where you have the four copper coil things, around the outside of that, the little thin rectangles, the surfaces of them are rusty. could this be the problem? if so how and what would I clean them with?
