Hey guys hope everyone is doing well. My nephew is a respectful welder and wants to teach me tig. I have never tigged but would love to learn seen videos on YouTube I believe I can do it don't look that hard might would if I never welded before and if I wasn't coordinated but I believe I can. Not to many people round here can and it would be a plus for me to add another notch in my belt. He said I can run it off my 63 redface sa 200 is this so? If so what all do I need? He told me he would look around and see if he can round up what I need but for me to ask around also and he will get me going? Thanks guys I look up to yall and trust yalls feedbacks. I said it before and I'll say it again im glad I found this site I love it.
Reply:Search for a tig rig. Get a cylinder of argon and some tungsten. Connect the tig rig to the negative electrode and scratch start tig some steel/stainless.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG
Reply:So just argon and a tig torch is all?
Reply:this covers the basics of what you would need to do scratch start tig off that machine.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...-Welder-PeopleYou'll need some sort of air cooled tig torch with a gas valve. I'd go with a CK 130 9 size torck that will let you do up to 130 amps at 100% duty cycle, or a CK 150 that's a 17 size torch rated at 150 amps 100% duty cycle. You'll need the cups, collets, collet holders, to fit the torch size you get, plus the tungtsen to match. I'd go with 3/32" tungsten and apropriate parts. A gas lens and cup to fit would replace the standard collet body and cup and I find it a bit easier to teach guys using a gas lens myself, though the standard parts will work fine as well. You will also need the hose to the torch ( many torch packages come with that), a power block to attach your stick lead to the tig torch and connect the gas line, the gas line to the flow meter, the flow meter and the argon cylinder. Most good suppliers can get you hooked up with all the right parts..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Tungsten, collet, collet body, back cap, flowmeter, argon hose, air cooled tig torch, gas through power block. Might be forgetting something but that's most of the things to get started.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG
Reply:You will want a 150 cf bottle or bigger. 1/16 70s2 filler and 3/32 red tungsten for steel. I think everyone thinks there's nothin to it until they try it. I think that's how alot of stuff in life works lol. And a 4.5 inch grinder to get off Millscale
Reply:Thanks guys I know all the parts for torch and been around it i just never tried it. So air cooled instead of water cooled for my machine? My nephew has seen my welds and watched me and has tried multiple times to get me to come weld with him just have low self esteeme when I get around pro welders. He said I weld better than most that he has seen come and go and he said he is being straight up with me no bs cuz I'm his uncle and he want cut me no slack lol. He swears in one hr with the way I weld and what I know that he can have me tigging and he said I will want to tig everything lol. Thanks guys if I find the stuff I will post pics and let yall know the update. He does stainless daily maybe I will be there one day. Only way is to get in there and do it.

Reply:welcome to the sight. There is a sticky at the beginning of this forum that covers the basics. Start there.
Reply:You can go water cooled if you want, but it adds more complexity and a lot more stuff to deal with on an engine drive power source like an SA 200. I doubt you really NEED to go water cooled. There are 200 amp rated air cooled torches out there, but they are big and bulky. Most guys doing high amp tig are usually doing alum, and that's not really doable with what you have. A 130-150 amp rated air cooled torch will easily allow you to do 3/16" steel no problem. I don't see you needing to do thicker steel/stainless with tig..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Ok thanks guys thats what i was needing to know. How come i didnt find this site sooner.
