I have inherited my Dads Lincoln 225 AC welder that he bought maybe in the 1960s.  I think its a workhorse that will never die.  What am I missing by not having DC or high freq.?

Reply:The average hobbiest won't miss all that much. Tons of projects both big and small have been built with those Ac machines over the years. You have it and it's cost you nothing, so go ahead and learn with what you have. About the only thing you won't be able to do lacking DC is move up to scratch start tig with that machine. No huge loss. With the price of cheap used industrial tigs now days, you can pick up one cheap when you make the decision to move up and will end up with a better machine in the long run.If you haven't already, think about taking a class at a local tech school of community college. It's the fastest way to learn the basics, and when you sit down and add up what it would cost you for materials, rod, electric and so on, not to mention the instruction, the class is usually stupid cheap. With your own machine, you can practice between classes and spend class time working on problem areas or learnuing new skills and less on doing repetitive practice..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size.
