ok ive googled this to no avail so i thought i would ask how are microns measured as in air filters for a compressor is 5 micron better then 40 micron does the lower number mean finer particle or bigger particle thought i would ask since some thing are measured differently like a 14 gauge wire is much smaller the 1 gauge wire etc just wanna get it straight 350P 30A spool gun cut master 51  syncro 250 other stuff " take a dog off the street and make him prosper and he will not bite you sad the same cannot be said for man" i didnt use punctuation just to piss you off

Reply:smaller micron rating the smaller the particle. For air filters there gets to be a point of diminishing returns as smaller particles arent the major cause of wear in an engine/compressor past a certain point. For oil filters finer is better but they should be changed more frequently as they will plug easier and faster when rated for a finer micron rating.
Reply:just to reiterate what others have said, in the SI system 1 micron = 1 millionth of an meter.  It is a direct linear relationship.  You need 1 million microns to make 1 full meter.Last edited by Oscar; 10-29-2012 at 04:37 PM.
Reply:It is 1 millionth of a meter.
Reply:1 micron is 0.001 millimeter. If you are metric-challenged, 1 micron is 0.0000393700787 inchesXMT304 (school)SP125+ (home)HF 4x6 BandsawGood judgement comes from experience and much of that comes from bad judgement.
Reply:cool thanks guys looking at filters for my compressor trying to figure how fine i need to go finding alot in the 40 micron and some in 5350P 30A spool gun cut master 51  syncro 250 other stuff " take a dog off the street and make him prosper and he will not bite you sad the same cannot be said for man" i didnt use punctuation just to piss you off

Reply:Hi, for an easy remembrance, if you are familiar with .0001" (one tenth of a thou) as being very tiny, then halve that again and you get one 20th of a thou, tinier again, and going to one 25th of a thou and you get one Micron.Ian.
