What is a standard mark up of the price of materials when bidding a job.  I live 120 miles for the steel supplier so freight charges also need to included on getting materials to what I need to charge
Reply:it depends entirely on the job, the customer, and the material.  but usually 25-30%AWS CWI xxxx21711968 SA200  Originally Posted by WelderMike  I hate being bipolar, It's awesome.
Reply:Mark up on a sliding scale. If you spend 1000 or more mark up 40 %  100-999 mark up 50%  50-99 100% and so on
Reply:Depends on how much work you have on, (whether your hungry for the job or not). repeat customer, new customer, size of the project - but most of all - the value of the car sitting in the driveway

Reply:Most of my materials are data/comm stuff and the customer is NOT the "end user." Therefore, my mark up is lower than most people here. For example, I never exceed the Home Depot price on wire & cable and still make a decent profit because I buy all materials wholesale- not on the internet.
Reply:If I don't have to do anything but unload it and load it on a cusomer's trailer 15-25% depending on the size of the order. If someone wants just a piece I have in inventory I usually sell it at minimum of 100% markup. Many times just charge $1.00/# and my cost is usually $.40-.45/#-DoogieMiller 350PMiller Trailblazer 325 EFI w/ Excel PowerLincoln LN25 suitcase welderXMT 304/22a feederMiller Syncrowave 350LXMiller EconotigHobart Handler 140(2) Uni-Hydro 42-14Hypertherm 65 plasmaWEBB Gap bed lathe
Reply:I can tell you how it is around me.  New metal is retailed at $.70-$.75 a pound.  Now what you buy it for is a different story. If you do not buy a lot of steel you may be paying close to that for your steel.  That does not matter you can only get what retail is.  I have been losing or breaking even on some steel for jobs for a couple years. The reason being I am small and do not have the buying power of some of the other fab shops in the area. To stay competitive I do not charge anymore than they do.  I am in process of changing all that now. My competition have been paying right around $.30 a pound for steel. I will be also very shortly but it is costing me a sizable investment to be able to do this but It has become necessary for me .
