Question about chromoly... Building a hammer

Building this hammer it's a little under 1/8 inch x 1 3/4 head mild steel. The piece of chromoly is 3/8 x 1 7/8. I'm not sure if I should use 70s2 or 309 or 312? And should I pre heat this chromoly to about 300 degrees ? I tacked it with 70s2 and seemed to tack real clean

Reply:Then I put a rod or 2 of silicon bronze on the brass side of the hammer and got it glowing red then was rotating the hammer and heard the bird shot lead bbs got liquified. That it was pretty funny but also pissed. So I cut it back apart and filled it with half sand half lead and welded it real hot and fast and put it under the sink right away. Did it 4 times and it worked good

That's not something I'd do with a chromoly.Do you know what grade it is?I'd see if I could get it penetrant tested, as it might be prone to cracking in the base material, depending on the exact grade. If it hasn't already cracked, it's unlikely it will afterwards.

Reply:weld it up then put the shot through a hole in the top and plug with 1/8NPT plug. or don't go crazy welding it.Welding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com
Reply:So I take it you made a dead blow hammer  The handle is to large of a diameter.  You could have filled it with BB's they would not have melted like your bird shot , but would have been a bit lighter .Or you could have filled it with lead ,using the lead as a soft hammer face like the old lead machinist hammers I made as an apprentice . But it was a good project to learn on.
