I just wanted some opinions on what some of you experienced and certified welders would say is the best way about getting certified. The GI bill reimburses a certain amount so money isn't really to obig a deal with thatHowever, I wanted to know as far as job and pay what are the best to go out and get myself ahead of searching for a job.I start the search in April because school is done in May and i just want to be prepared. I have a a MIG, TIG, And Stick at home and full access to any type of machine in the school.. so what would you suggest I really focus onI am going to learn al of it and do the best i can, but i want to know where the money is as wellThanks guysCheers WD“It is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation.” ― Herman Melville“Those who believe in telekinetics, raise my hand.” ― Kurt Vonnegut
Reply:the best way to get certified around here is to go to either WNCC or EWC in Wyoming.  Some community colleges and schools are AWS certified testing centers and you can get a cert quite easily.  Only costs a few hundred bucks depending on the cert.  Last one I did took about 2 hours total.  Might be similar places in your area.As far as which cert to go after you will be able to answer that best as you know what types of welding jobs are available in your area.  What kinds of jobs do you see advertised?  What is your instructor advising you to do?  Does you school offer any job placement services?  And the biggest factor is simply what kind of welding do you want to do?  Shop/Manufacturing/in the field/etc...
Reply:Most of the time to get a welding job in construction they hit you with a 6-G test first. 6010 for the root, and hot, 7018 for the fill and cap. This will give you a lot of certs in one setting. And it separates the boys from the men real quick. Well in this case the girls from the women. Reply:Originally Posted by Welding DameI know where and cost here in NYC, I was just wondering for suggestions.... CEP kind of answered that best.. I been doing some research as far as the Serts are conducted, and they all seem tot just vary due to, like you said, area and what people ar hiring for..chers WD
Reply:No matter what, you should practice 6-G with SMAW, GTAW. Most employers will hit you with this first. Their mind set is to see if you can cut it, very fast. Majority will be looked out on the root pass! If not just on the way they tack the coupons up.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:I haven't been on a 6010 root job in years. Most places want TIG root these days.
Reply:New york's got a DOT welding test that qualifies you to weld bridges in nys

Reply:I'm talking refineries and power plant pipe welding. Not much 6010 being used anymore in this area. I've been in a fab shop for the last two years, we don't use stick at all.
Reply:I hear ha. I spent many years in a pulp mill and am now welding structural with the ironworkers in industrial construction. All we use is stick.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
