I have 2inch stantion poles. They are like 2 inch pipe I guess. Threaded on both ends. I am using them to creat a shade structure. But instead of just using a threaded female X female coupling, I want to make it look nicer.I looked at King metals for a cast steel collar but they don't have anything in 2inch. Any ideas on how to dress it up so it doesn't look so industrial?Lincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v  Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain
Reply:What about cutting the thread off and weld pipe to plate and add scrolls from plate to pipe ?
Reply:Oh, I just re read this and realized I did a horrible job describing what I meant. The poles are 7ft tall. I want them to be about 9 or 10. So I need to couple them on the vertical. So the coupling will be just above people's heads. Well, way above my short ***, but most peoples.I am gonna look for some twisted baskets that I may be able to disguise the couplers with. If anyone has a better idea, PLEASE, let me know.Lincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v  Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain
Reply:Cut off the threads and slug the pipe?GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:Why not just butt weld the pipes?
Reply:If it's 2" schedule 40, you could get some 2 1/2" schedule 40 and drop the 2" inside and weld. Use the 2 1/2" on bottom.
Reply:Flip the pipe end for end so the connection point won't be at eye level (or thereabouts )..."The beauty of the Second Amendment is that it will not be needed until they try to take it." - Thomas Jefferson If the Lights are a Flashin', STAY OFF the tracks!!! It might be me at the Throttle...
Reply:Does it have to be removable? Make it like a post hole auger extension with a solid bar welded inside one pipe and the other pipe slips over top. Instead of using a bolt to pin it together, use a roll pin or 2 and grind them to match the pipe OD.
Reply:Hmmmm....I thought about putting the joint on bottom. I dunno. No reason why I couldn't. I may disguise the joint on the bottom as well.I thought about butt welding them with a slip fit piece on the inside. I don't want to grind the weld. I don't want the weld to be visible. Ok. Thanks guys. I will think on it for a while. The other ideas aren't really what I want to do.Lincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v  Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain
Reply:Here is an idea for you.. Decorate or dress up the coupler to make it look like it is something that it is not.. ie, an ornate embellishment rather than a coupler connecting two pieces of pipe.-Niche
Reply:With blacksmithing, you usually just tack collar stock to the pieces to be wrapped, then heat the wrap with an OA torch and wrap tight and weld and file to finish the weld. I've seen guys do this with round stock, then weld both sides and grind to finish so it looks like it was wrapped with half round that then blends into the base material with a concave curve. In some cases the shape is built up out of several pieces like doing wood moldings. I have picts some where of a sign that was done this way. It's all done in steel, but it looks like it was all done in wood trim molding.I've also seen custom made pieces done by making up a swage and then forming the stock hot thru the swage so that you get a piece with a custom profile. Probably more work than you want to attempt. This shows how some of that is done..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Go buy longer pipe.   2'' schedule 40 in a full length is 21 feet
Reply:I'd just use steel threaded couplings rather than iron and put them down rather than up. Like these.http://www.grainger.com/product/GRAINGER-APPROVED-Merchant-Coupling-WP120656/_/N-n02Z1z01i3r?nls=0&suggestConfigId=2&s_pp=false&pic  Url=//static.grainger.com/rp/s/is/image/Grainger/2KMD5_AS01?$smthumb$---Meltedmetal
Reply:Don't want a visible coupler?  Then weld the pipe up and either do a really nice cap pass on the weld or dress the welds so they disappear.Or just use longer pipe to start with.  Connect the pipe pieces together by welding them to a shaped piece (hollow steel spheres/balls, perhaps?  http://www.kingmetalscatalog.com/lg_...highlight/pipe or some other steel shapes  http://www.kingmetalscatalog.com/lg_...og/Master_2013 ) instead of using a threaded coupler?  How about duct tape?    The best laid schemes ... Reply:NicheFab,That is what I was saying. Using a basket or something. MoonRise,Bingo. That would do it. Those particular balls are not big enough on the inside diameter. But yep. That would be a nice fix.C'mon guys, it's not that anyone cares. It is just that I want to do something different. The metal I have was free. And I have a lot of it. You know darn well how pricey steel is these days. These are made for structural support. I misspelled the word. It should have said "Stanchion" and not "Stantion".I going to look for some pieces that will fit.Lincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v  Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain

Reply:Oh, I was thinking of a globe split in half. Weld the pipe together, then clamp the globe around the welded area.Lincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v  Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain
