hey all, just wondering what you think of this:http://portland.craigslist.org/clk/tls/3392884977.htmlI know more about rocket science than I do lathes, so any input would be appreciated. Thanks, Tom.And also maybe some recommendations on books regarding machinist basics.Lincoln SA 200Esab Caddy 160Thermal Arc 201TSMiller Dialarc HFI don't like making plans for the day because then the word "premeditated" gets thrown around the courtroom....
Reply:That is a nice piece. I bet it is quite a bit larger than you think by that photo. What types of material will you be turning. More specifically diameter ? 560 is pretty slow if you are cutting smaller aluminum pieces. But for things more than a few inches in diameter you will be ok. I would love to have thatHTP Invertig 201Lincoln Idealarc SP250Miller 180 AC StickBy farmall:They should have held the seagull closer to the work, squeezing evenly for best deposition.
Reply:it looks like an old monarch( i can tell by the ways) if its good and tight 1500.00 is not a bad price . do a little homework and see if it is a re badged Monarch if it is thats good it's definitely worth spending some money on . i am warning you that is one heavy sonfabitch think about how you are going to move it before you buy you need to be real careful moving a lathe have someone that knows what they are doing and get bids before you buy it you will spend some money having it done but well worth it for a good old lathe . let us know what you do . good luck .CT
Reply:You might check this thread over at PM.http://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb...-lathe-244086/For the money I think it would be a dandy machine. The taper attachment adds some value. Is this one 18"?
Reply:I agree it looks like the old Monarch the tech school had that came off a WWII Navy repair ship. The thing was very well built and very heavy. I'd have loved to have it, but would bet it tipped the scale at well over 4 ton.You had better have a good heavy fork lift or better yet figure in the cost of simply having a rigger move it.I didn't think to look when I had the link up, but also check and see if it's 3 phase. The one at the tech school was, and that was a real deal killer with several of the machines I was looking at. By the time I added in the cost to move the machine ( either renting a heavier lift than I have or a rigger), and the need to either put on a single phase motor or get a phase converter, the costs were no longer so attractive.I'd have loved to have had  a place to put that old Monach though... It would be great if it could talk and tell all it's stories from it's varied life..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:Well, it's actually about double what I want to spend, but the looks and appeal of it really caught my eye.Regarding rpm's and material; that's what I know nothing about.  I really don't "plan" on doing anything with aluminum, but you never know.  Mostly want a lathe "just because". I've gotten by this many years without, but.... Decades ago, I blew it.  My grandfather passed away, and my aunt in charge of the estate said I could have anything I wanted.  I passed on a HUGE Atlas lathe, an International dumptruck, a backhoe with trailer, a helicopter he was building, an aluminum vee boat with twin 80hp outboards, an electric car he made among other stuff.I really didn't account for the weight, I figured 2 ton'ish? It may very well be larger than I want.I don't think it's 3 phase, there's a pic of a newer Dayton motor with data on the label.**nevermind, I see that's just the on/off switch (I think)**  I don't know, we'll see what happens. Thanks for the replies, and Forhire, I'll go check that forum now.  Thanks.Last edited by dubl_t; 11-10-2012 at 10:26 AM.Lincoln SA 200Esab Caddy 160Thermal Arc 201TSMiller Dialarc HFI don't like making plans for the day because then the word "premeditated" gets thrown around the courtroom....
Reply:yea Steve, as much as I hate to, I'm gonna pass.  No forklift (or pallet jacks, lol), and really more than I have budgeted.....but it sure is pretty OK, Now I get it.  I couldn't understand why you said I'd have to deal with customs; the lathe is in Vancouver WA, not British Columbia. The link by Forhire was strictly about the machine though, so I'm still looking for text book recommendations.  I may hit up the community college also.Last edited by dubl_t; 11-10-2012 at 10:59 AM.Reason: confusion on remark.Lincoln SA 200Esab Caddy 160Thermal Arc 201TSMiller Dialarc HFI don't like making plans for the day because then the word "premeditated" gets thrown around the courtroom....
Reply:Originally Posted by 7A749That lathe is very nice, but prolly not quite suited for you, from what I gather. Looks like you'll have to deal with Customs too, PITA.But, if you have a place for it & a way to move it, great little starter machine. Just be aware without a forklift, it's gonna be a bear to move.IMHO of course

Reply:Hi fantastic piece of iron, old school at it's best.....this was my life years ago.....you could work all your life on one of these and never run out of grunt within it's capacity....they never age, the basics will always be there, unless you envisage competing with latest CNC output.Make sure it has a 4 jaw chuck and a face plate if you do go for it.Also make sure you get it delivered by a reputable heavy haulage company........the prospect of damaging something as good as this would be criminal. The up front cost must be expected, but after a number of years this will be just a memory. You probably won't find another machine that from the appearances has been used strictly by the book and maintained on a regular basis. It's more capable for doing heavy work and also some smaller stuff too, but if you only ever just want to do smaller stuff, say max 30mm diam bar, then maybe it will be just too big, take up a lot of space, use a lot of 3 phase,  speed range too slow etc, but it can do that,  just other lathes smaller than that can do those smaller sizes better, probably cost less too.The price for the lathe is pure bargain basement, just the delivery charges will make you cry.Ian.

Reply:dubl_t, I recomend , How To Run a Lathe   by SouthbendThis is an antiquated book but very useful even today. There are many books out there but for about $8 you should pick this one up while your still shopping for that lathe .A 7 x 12 JET metal lathe for $700 used would be my choice.Last edited by Insaneride; 11-15-2012 at 12:03 AM.

Reply:I picked up a Clausing Colchester 13x40 a few months ago for a 1000 bucks. Worn a bit, but a good start for me. ~2400lbs, but was easily moved with a pallet jack and a drop lift trailer. There are deals out there. I did the move myself, but was aided by the fact that the seller could drop the lathe onto a large heavy duty pallet with his forklift.ESAB Heliarc 252
Reply:The CL posting has been taken down, so I can't comment on the lathe.  As for books, if you have time to browse the local thrift stores, you may find what you need.  I've picked up some good vintage ones for loose change.HF Dual Mig 151 with Bluewelders and Galaxieman's modsHF Digital Plasma TorchHF Blue Flames Hood70's era Craftsman 230 stick welderVictor 100 OA
Reply:dubl_t, I  your rainy weather has arrived here and its nice. As for the lathe I mentioned, 7X12  should have said 7X40. You cant do gun barrels with 7X12.  I saw one on CL last year for $700 with steady rest, follow rest and stuf but my money always runs out before the good dealsAbout  the book, I think you can download a free copy from Southbend or Amazon?Last edited by Insaneride; 11-17-2012 at 12:30 PM.
Reply:the only problem i would see with that lathe is you wont be using carbide in it.. it doesnt have the rpms for carbide use.tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/
