I have been making these, for a while and if you look at the tank on the far right you'll notice that where the manway frame is it's kind of curled in. To do this we use hand tools and brute force. This takes a long time and hurts your knuckles when it slips. I was wondering if anyone knew of a power tool that would make this easier/quicker? Thanks.http://specific.net

Reply:Hi, it looks like that underground meth lab from Breaking Bad.......it isssssss....ooooohhh.I would think that a large press and a forming die would do that without wrinkling it....panel beating is probably what he's doing now.I don't suppose the actual bent in area could be formed from a smaller piece of material and Tig welded in after it's formed......might be easier to form a smaller piece of material and allow a smaller frame for the press tool. Many years ago I worked for a firm that made the seat backs for Volkswagen, and we used to make a wood pattern to the shape required, cast the two top and bottom die halves in cast iron and grind the surfaces smooth, then mate the top and bottom halves by hand.....volume was in the thousands.Ian.

Reply:Well, if you're hand forming that curved in part of the oval opening, you're doing a damn fine job. Can you show us the hand tools you presently use?I don't know about power tools, but I once made a hand held English wheel. It was small and got into tight spots on flared fenders on a car. Maybe that's the ticket for you. Would brass wheels help with the finish?I also got a kit for a palm nailer. It makes the nailer into a hand held forming/shaping tool. Use against wood, a shot bag or dollies. You can make inserts for the palm nailer out of carriage bolts, but they aren't too good. Again, would brass be a good medium to beat on this beautiful SS? You could make brass caps for the hammer tool. This is not my tool, just an image from Google. An air chisel is also used for this. I think that's what my kit was for, but I can't find it. Look at Eastwood, MetalShapers forums and even Harbor Freight for ideas.__________________
Reply:if you made many of those holes i would do 2 piece die like dimple die and use bolts to press it.
