Reply:I have used 308 stainless to weld new exhaust pipe .Years ago, dont think I can do it now.I like welding with stainless.Its expensive but works well on projects.Stainless rods runs very smooth,try it you will like it.
Reply:Stainless rods are an alloy so rusting will happen on old rods.
Reply:Ive used stainless on custom wrenches and it seems to hold up well. Runs pretty good too.
Reply:Looks like you got 308? can't quite read the number but if I remember right 308 is for stainless base material and 309 is a good option for welding stainless to mild steel. We used some 309 at the shipyard I used to work for for welding in stainless hatch rings and prop nut lock tabs. Stainless rod runs great, you probably will run 5-10 amps cooler than the same size steel rod. Reply:347 has a bit more chrome and nickle than 308 + niobium/columbium which ties up carbon for high heat applications... It will work for attaching stainless to stainless and even stainless to steel if you are careful. I've heard the nickname "crackalloy" in reference to 347... I think it had more to do with welding 347 plate/pipe than using it as a filler. I believe the -15 means that the rod is going to run rough.... I believe it has fluorides in it. The weld puddle and resulting bead are really "clean" by metallurgical standards, even if looks suffer. Picture a craptastic casting that is so filled with crap that no weld run with a -16 rod works. They may look pretty but they crack due to contaminants being pulled out of the casting. Switch to a -15, deal with the spatter and rough bead, but no cracks.
