Reply:I almost bought one a few years back off CL.  Too cool.  I think I convinced the guy to keep it, as it was his Dad's, although he was moving.I forget the history but Mid-States was acquired by some welding company and later rolled into some other welder company. I'd have to look it up. Reply:is it a Marquette,or Forney. they both had machines like that.It might be why the taps are in an M formationI like his welding shop !Last edited by gxbxc; 04-08-2016 at 07:40 PM.
Reply:I have an old welder that my grandfather bought in the first days of welding.  As the story goes, the welder was a transformer type with a frequency of 60hz. did not work well. The missing link was bought and added to increase the frequency.  I will have to look at the machine.  When I was younger we hooked it to a generator and went around town thawing water pipes for people when it bought cold.  John
Reply:My guess is Marquette. I have one that is cool. Got it for $50 with cables. It is cast iron with fenders on the wheels. Welds great for an AC machine.
Reply:i was able to find a another vid from the guy it is a missing link  its cool as heck though i want put in my living room next the tv stand add a sound box that  yells exterminate every time you walk by

Reply:That is a great Art Deco machine Bob. I would buy one if I ever came across it.
Reply:Bob WarnerYour welder is a fabulous example of High Industrial Art Deco cabinetry. For three years, I had my shop in a spare hanger at an 'Industrial Airport'. [I was fortunate to met Patty Wagstaff - via the common hanger . . . ]http://www.google.com/search?client=...UTF-8&oe=UTF-8I have always been-taken: with field/trade/craft nomenclature. From this aviation exposure I learned: your 'welder fenders', are called Pants or Spats . . . this dates from the Deco/Streamline Era.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aircraft_fairinghttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streamline_Modernehttp://www.google.com/search?client=...UTF-8&oe=UTF-8Your welder - is 'Better Dressed' than I am . . .Opus
Reply:Now, if I could find a collector I would be in business. I know where there is another one that is the same make but different plug configuration. If I had room and cash I'd have a bunch of these just cause they are cool, but since I don't I'd sell it to get what I NEED.
Reply:Bob, your welder is cool.  Love the fenders.  Is it a 350BB model? The welder in post 1 is definitely Mid-States, with the "Missing Link" HF box on top.  Mid-States made some welders for AIRCO and were eventually bought by them.  Then ESAB bought the welder business from AIRCO."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:Yes it is a 350bbIts as heavy as it is cool.
Reply:Yup I have that same machine! Runs 7018 & 6010 very smooth! plus I have the extra High freq box for tig, havnt used that part yet. i will post pics later.
Reply:Missing Link, 6010 with an AC machine?A guy up the road was wanting a welder and I found a Marquette 350BB for him.  He paid $100 I think but it did have long leads and some sort of cart.  He likes it."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:Too bad its not worth a boat load. It will be the day after I sell it.

Reply:Problem with 6010 on AC is the arc usually wants to go out every time the current swaps between DC+ and DC-. The fact he has a high frequency unit on his machine is probably why he can manage to run 6010 rods on AC where others can't. Same basic reason why cont HF is used to tig weld alum on AC..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:AO Smith made a ac transformer the R2D2 welder and Marquette also had a round welder along with GE.I have 14 welders way too many and they all work. Always looking for more.P&H,Westinghouse,Metal and Thermite and many more are out there.
Reply:Those are way cool art deco machines. In my opinion, priceless! When designers made those, they not only worked great, but looked great and still do a generation or two later!
