Here's my question. I've been reading up a lot on 7014 rods. I like them. I also don't want to turn this into a 7018 vs. 7014 discussion. I know the differences and benefits of each...don't care to rehash that again. Some people say you can run 7014 vertical up and others say that you should run it vertical down. It seems to be a "runny" rod, so what's the real deal on how you do verticals with 7014?Lincoln Ranger 305gMiller X-Treme 8VS Suitcase FeederLincoln Powermig 210 MPLincoln AC225 TombstoneAmico MMA-160Titanium Easy Flux 125A pile of grinders.
Reply:I use them vertical up. Down you'd trap too much slag..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan

Reply:Yaknow, it's funny about how of all the pro welders I know that use my equipment when they are home from millwrighting or offshore have never heard of or tried 7014.....And how they all love it afterwards. Thanks for this thread. I'm certain it will serve to expand the information available to folks about that electrode. It is what it is, and serves very well for what it is designed to do. It is also a very user friendly rod and very simple and worry free to store.
Reply:I've gotten to the point where I stick weld anything over 1/4" thick. I'm not going to be one of these guys that uses MIG for its unintended purpose. 7014 is such cake to run that it is probably good for 95% of the thicker stuff I do. I might not use it to weld a pintle hitch on a dump truck, but for everything else it's FINE. I have found that there are good and bad 7014 rods. I get Hobart rods at a local big box store (1/8" and 5/32") and they run great and the slag chips right off. I had a LWS order some off brand 3/32" 7014 for me and they suck....bad. It takes a jackhammer and an act of Congress to get the Slagle off of those puppies.Lincoln Ranger 305gMiller X-Treme 8VS Suitcase FeederLincoln Powermig 210 MPLincoln AC225 TombstoneAmico MMA-160Titanium Easy Flux 125A pile of grinders.

Reply:I use 7014 a lot for farm repairs and some heavy equipment repair, It's one rod that runs well on both Ac and DC. I find they weld vertical up much better if they are dry and fresh out of the oven. For me, they weld a lot like 7018. I would not use them for welding a hitch but they are a good general all purpose rod.
Reply:I used to use a lot of 7014 before we got our 252. 5/32 7014 will lay a lot of metal quick. Just like any other tool just have to choose the right one for the jobMillermatic 252millermatic 175miller 300 Thunderboltlincoln ranger 250smith torcheslots of bfh'sIf it dont fit get a bigger hammer
Reply:7014 just need to be kept dry and don't need an oven. Just hope the guy pushing 6013 doesn't come along and start telling you how great it is in India and China.

Reply:6013 and 7014 are both rutile flux rods. 7014 just has added iron powder and a thicker flux coating that allows using a shorter arc length or even dragging rod..so it would be popular with the rod draggers
Reply:Originally Posted by CEPGood idea! I did some fillet weld break tests. 7014 broke with 10-blows. 7018 that never seen the inside of a rod oven broke at 18-blows. 7018 right out of the rod oven broke at 23-blows.

Reply:Granted the fact that I'm not an every-day professional welder, (and run 7018 almost exclusively), I've never liked running 7014 vertical....    Flat and horizontal I love it, but vertical never works out for me...   Since many of you seem quite capable of running it #3, I'll chalk my failure up to lack of experience...

Reply:My father-in-law (career welder) was showing me how to run my new to me AC only welder with 7014.  Vertical up was definitely the way to go for me.  Much less risk of slag inclusion.

Reply:For me it's important to keep a very tight arc going vertical up on AC with 7014, I also lower my amps about 10 amps. DC is better but AC works well also.
Reply:7014 are probably one of the easiest rods ever made to use, unfortunately they don't seem to be as  readily available as they were years ago, 6013s and 7016s appear to have pride of place on  the shelves.                   In the 1970s I worked for an earthmoving & mining contractor who used no other rod, for repairs on anything from sheet metal to a Cat D8.
