Welding under "R" stamp cert, boiler gas feed line. I have 2" sch 40 pipe the 'Man' wants three passes on 6010/7018, but the inspector wants to avoid excessive build up. All I have is 1/8 rod, and this is driving me crazy. What do you do? I have been grinding my root out to minimize fill, but a downhill hot pass is out of the question, so I race through the cap with moderate success.Constant Current Weldor.
Reply:better you than me! I don't even like TIG welding that stuff.I guess you could always grind some of the hot pass out before you cap.
Reply:Schedule 40 I would only two pass. There isn't enough wall thickness there. Option would be socket weld fittings.
Reply:This ol skool man calling the shots round here hates tig because he thinks it takes too long, probably because most of what we weld is shc 80 and up... It sure would be nice right here, no slag particulate to worry about in the gas train/burner, no sparks on the new floors/equipment, ect. Putting some 3/32 excaliburs in the truck I just found.Constant Current Weldor.
Reply:Socket welds would be too much fun. They won't have that.Constant Current Weldor.

Reply:Just tell them (ha, ha, ha as they send you down the road) if they want the job done right you need some smaller rod!  Or option two:  hand them the stinger and ask them to show you how It's done (you'll probably get sent down the road for that one also).  Option three:  disregard my advice and keep your job but be stressed out until the job is completed.  Feel for you being in that predicament.  Sorry sons of bi¥£¥£Che's!  Oops, guess you can tell some past similar experiences pushing my emotions buttons.  There is no way it can be done without a lot of grinding on the root pass and filler pass.   Sad they know your a good welder and hired you for your expertise but won't let you do your job right with the proper tools/rods.  They think they are getting the job done faster with the larger rod, but it's not going to work out that way as you well know.  The inspector has every right to reject excessive build up on the cap, per ASME code.  Sounds to me like the boss "MAN" doesn't remember his welding days very well.  It's a shame but it's almost like you have to do one joint their way and time it and show them the marginal results and then get some proper 3/32nd 7018 and time the joint and show them the beautiful results and ask them which they would like!  Good fortune to you my brother on this one. Some kind of Big Blue constant current welding machineAnother smaller yet, Blue machine (it's got wire in it)
Reply:They want x-ray quality welds, they better let you get the right rods to weld it.
Reply:Wait! You've been capping 2 inch schedule 40 with 1/8th 7018??!!??!?!?!?  Gotta be strictly rollout, no?  Take some pics!

Reply:Even if using 3/32 7018, two passes is going to be dicey proposition on sch40 pipe. Good luck!
Reply:Some of this party, pretty nice work, but lots of bs.  I'm getting ready to drag up and take this down the road. I'm not good enough to make my welds look right with a Bobcat 225. They are saying the 3/32 are not "qualified" Attached ImagesConstant Current Weldor.
Reply:well, that's just stupid. I hate it when knuckleheads are in charge.
Reply:I was on a job once where the head knucklehead refused to buy gas lenses. He said: "We built a whole nuke plant with straight cups."  This other guy told me later: "Yeah, but it took them 29 years to do it."
Reply:'' They are saying the 3/32 are not "qualified"NOT QUALIFIED ? I would fire the guy that hired HIM !         It's not uncommon to use 3/32 7018 on schedule 40    6''. What a douch !
Reply:I am currently installing a 2200 HP boiler in an ethanol plant. 4" sch 40 off the main, 6" sch 40 after the first regulator. I use 1/8th 7018 on the 12" steam line!On 99% of natural gas lines I put in a 1/8th 6010 root, then an up hill 6010 fill, and then a 3/32 7018 cap.     I used to only put in a root, with a 7018 fill/cap. But using 3 passes just guarantees that none of the joints will have a pin hole leak when we pressure test.Local 83

Reply:straight cups. Yeah. You could do that. But then again, we used to build houses out of mud and hay. Then we got lumber. Or something like that. Technology is supposed to improve the results.
